We had the same problem. We found it more expensive via prescription. If the prescription were open ended it would be ok but they are for single dosage only. You would end up paying the presciption fee plus the price of the advocate each time you ordered. We have 2 dogs and 2 cats. It adds up to a lot of money.

I use Vectra for my cats. all my cats are over 15 lbs. seems to work just fine. @wiseowl
and I actually do every other month, not the monthly as recommended. I start in May, and last dose is October. so far its worked that way well for years. Yes, one or two ticks sometime appear, but not many over the course of the season. and no fleas.

We use Frontline Combo for our cats, every two months throughout the year.like @redstar. Van weighs over well over 15lbs and Chere Khan much much less but they get the same dose. We pay 14€ for three pipettes at a pet/agriculture store. more at the Chemist and even more (like 24€) at the Vets. Van is good as gold having it put on ... but it is a fight to the death with Chere Khan! Vet bills are relatively cheap here and strangely most of them are female.

          Is this place cheaper?

Pet Drugs Online - Search Results for Advocate For Dogs

Plus, in addition to our local vets (4 mins walkies away for checkups, or 7 mins if poorly and transporting), but we also have Dog registered at Pets at Home because they are both open over Bank Hol weekends, plus they're cheaper for some simple stuff.

Might be worth checking them out
          Vets | Pets At Home

P.S. Since an experience earlier this year, we've changed to a flea/tick treatment after Dog getting 2 of the latter and finding out they're becoming all too common in our area.

Woo, Don't feed Tiny and Penny before you go to the vets and make sure they have had a poo as well, even little helps :)

In my teen years we had a GSD who roamed our farm in Ohio. he stayed in the barn (wanted to) in the cold winter months. we barely gave him any of the "shots" around today, only rabies. he got medium grade dog food with bacon grease on it and garlic. He lived until 14 years old.

My 2 GSD, only made it to average 8 years old, they got it all. best food , current shots, heart worm preventative etc. and both got cancer.
and they spent their winters in the house.

Good afternoon @Scrungee and thank you:smile: I will go to pets at home which is quite near to us,the Link below is very good indeed I shall use them in the future, thank you, the total for 3 months comes to £28 which is very good,I think even with the £38 prescription fee it is very reasonable total £66.

My vet has recommended Prinovox as preventative flea and worm treatments for our Greek import. Its available for dogs too. Not sure how much it costs as he had other treatments at the time and I don't bother with the itemized bill anymore.

I am absolutely shocked at how much your vet is charging for a prescription fee: £19 per prescription is daylight robbery! :rrant: May even be in breach of certain regulations there  Of course they are permitted to charge a fee, but that fee shouldn't be so high that it acts as a deterrent from the client seeking a cheaper source of medication. As an example, my own vet charges £8.10 for a written prescription.

Does your vet offer any kind of health plan to cover annual vaccinations plus flea and worming treatments which spread the cost across the year? Ozzy has a health care plan for all of his vacs, flea and worming treatments plus other little perks. Because of the package, it is offered at a vastly reduced rate. I also get text reminders for when to apply the flea stuff too.

However, when it comes to needing two different packs due to the weight of Penny & Tiny, your vet is absolutely correct. Advocate is a prescription only flea treatment, so, there are strict rules governing its use and the correct dosage must be adhered to under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. Even though the weight difference between them is only 100grms (or, in old money, 3-4 ounces) the active ingredient between the two packages is vastly different.

Be aware that you have to be registered with the vet who you are asking to dispense it and, when you register, they will request for Penny & Tiny from the vet you are currently registered with. Prior to writing any prescription they would be obliged to carry out a health assessment on both of them and would expect that they would be your only vet as per the guidance set out by our Government
the definition of "under their care" as interpreted by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
You're quite right to be outraged by the £19 per prescription charge: outrageous!

Good evening @luciusmaximus and thank you my friend,it looks good but I will still need two prescriptions

Hello @"M" my dear friend, yes I did know that all the information the vets assistant gave me was correct,it was her attitude and manner that I objected to.I always treat people with respect and in a courteous polite manner whether they are beggars or royalty ,and I expect the same back, she speaks to everyone as if they are something on the bottom of her shoe,I won't except that behaviour from anyone,as she soon found out,I have sent an email to my vets and also a hand delivered letter, informing him that her behaviour and his £19 per prescription charge's are not acceptable ,and I will be pursuing further the matter further;)

Having worked with a dog rescue charity, I discovered that ''Pet drugs online'' will save a lot of money, and I have been using their service for a long time now.
You can buy 'Effipro' to protect your pets from ticks and fleas at (I think it`s £2.40) per dose. The ingredients in this preparation are the same as 'Frontline' and it is applied in exactly the same way.

When it comes to prescriptions, you can contact ''Pet drugs online'' and the helpful team there will point you to your nearest vet who will provide a free prescription, which you can forward online or by post.

Hope this helps to save all you pet lovers some dosh .....then there will be more to spend on plants. :)
PS....just checked - Effipro is actually £2.80 per dose.
