I’ve just been looking into moving to France, for myself, Aunt Sally, the daughter and grandchildren. It looks like Brexit has scuppered my dream. I’m not happy

Have you seen the awful weather they're having across the channel! :rolleyespink: Quite a lot of deaths from the weather - even in Switzerland where they're used to snow.

A two year old girl died here yesterday after being hit by a snow plough. What were her parents thinking of allowing her outside in the weather we have been having?

There has been a programme on the telly each afternoon about Brits looking at moving to Spain, Portugal, Madeira to spend the winter in the warmth, but what makes me smile is that some of them have dogs so either have to pay for them to be kennelled while the owners are away this costing money,or else they have to get the pet passports etc to take them with them.

Also the Brits have to spend from between £500-£1,000+ each month for the winter rental and some of them have utility bills on top to pay then there is the food and transport costs (taxis/buses)on top of all this plus they will still have to pay their own utility bills while they are all away for the winter and I expect they are going to have ask relatives or neighbours to pop in to their house to check that the heating is still ticking over ok.

Thinking about all this I think I would rather stay here in my nice warm house for the winter and it will work out cheaper so can have more holidayshere in good old Blighty in the summer months...:snorky::Wino:

Morning @Kandy. What programme are you watching?

I know/know of quite a few folk who split their time here and there. Those with pets bring them with them as it is an easier process now. In saying that we carted our cats with us from 2001-04.

You can get long-term rentals here from as little as 250 Euros a month plus utilities. Depends on what you want ... apartment, villa with pool, etc. You have to eat and pay for transport wherever you live. These things are cheaper here. I don't know anyone who keeps their heat on in the UK whilst here.

Personally I would rather be warm year round ... we are currently 16c but expecting some sunshine and showers.

Hi @Victoria Sorry late in replying but have been out walking:smile:

The programme is on BBC1 at 3.45pm every day (apart from weekends?) and I think Gloria Huniford(sp) presents it. We have only seen a few of them so not sure how many countries have been shown. Most of them are small apartments, some with the use of a pool but then that pushes the price even higher which is not what a lot of Brits want and one place had a lot of steps to go up to get to the apartment and this couple had two dogs.

Interesting about Brits not having the heating on as where we used to live many oldies told us that when they were abroad for three months in the winter months they would have their central heating ticking over in case of burst water pipes and then had someone going in to pick up the mail and check that everything was ok and that they hadn’t been burgled.

Our friends brother and sister in law visited her recently from the Algarve and they couldn’t cope with the snow we had the other week and the high hotel bills so dumped themselves on her & my friend had recently had a heart attack. They can’t come in the summer months because the British relatives all go over to his place for the sun but my friend said when the temperatures hit 40c it gets a bit too much because she is not used to such high temperatures
A warm climate would suit me for the winter especially with my Arthritis problems but Mr Kandy refuses to fly or go on a large ship so we stay here instead and turn the heating up:biggrin:

Hope you can catch up with the series as it looks like it is coming to an end soon for this series:smile:

There are quite a few hotels in Spain that have Brits stay there for three months in the winter. They charge very little for B&B (about £50 per week) and include entertainment. They do this in order to keep the hotel going in the winter and to keep their staff (a lot of hotels have to shut in the winter as it's uneconomical to keep them open and pay the staff). It works well for them and the guests. The hotels charge for dinner but it's only a minimal cost - or you can eat out.

Some of my customers used to do this (it was about £20 per week in those days :old:) and say that it was cheaper than being at home. Most of them said that they kept the heating at home on very low to stop pipes freezing but it saved them lots of money on heating costs.

I don't think you can get anything economical in Madeira as it's a year round holiday destination.

My moan today is that I'm having trouble with my emails. We use Outlook to download to from our server (between us we get 100-150 per day and get no spam). Since yesterday it has gone haywire! :rolleyespink:

I've had to shut Outlook down as it keeps downloading the emails that have already been downloaded . So, if I open Outlook it immediately wants to download the last 500 emails that it has already downloaded three times. :wallbanging:

I'm hoping it's a problem at the server that will sort itself out in a day or so. :fingers crossed:

We can always go into our accounts at the server and check emails and reply to them but we won't have them in Outlook where a lot of them need to be filed (lots of important stuff).

Tom, who usually sorts out our computer problems will try and find time to pop round and look at it but he's very busy.

@shiney , have you tried accessing your emails in your web browser ? You should be able to do this if you go onto your providers home page for instructions. Or you should be able to set up your email on W10 Mail , that comes with Windows 10. I use Outlook and it can have it's moments !

@HarryS Hi Harry, yes, we're accessing them through the browser at the moment but really need to use Outlook because of the volume and type of emails we receive.

We both run a lot of organisations and clubs and belong to many others and need to file the emails (incoming and outgoing) in folders in Outlook. We must have close to ten thousand stored - they're all backed up, twice a day, onto an extra internal hard drive and two separate external hard drives.

I think the problem has been sorted now :blue thumb: :phew:. It must have been BT playing silly B's! :mute: We now have to start deleting all the copies (over 1,000) that have been downloaded :rolleyespink:
