I find that practice rather strange i.e: the Council charging "extra" to collect household rubbish:dunno::doh: Why don't they just include it in the domestic rates as they do here in Cheshire, makes it a lot easier:snorky: I've just taken 8 large sacks of a sawn up Leather Suite, to the local dump where the guys there gave me a hand to chuck it all in the tip while we had a talk about fishing...and no extra charge:heehee:

I think I've mentioned it before but our authority started bringing in a charge for green waste. They charged £1 per special plastic bag and wouldn't take away any green waste not in those bags. The system lasted just over a month as people were dumping their green waste on the grass verges and hedgerows, the green waste lorries were picking up almost nothing and the council were paying the contractors for picking up very little.

The £35 green bin charge was introduced in Warrington last year , while I worked there . @Doghouse Riley , looks like your Manchester council has picked up on this wonderful idea . No doubt this charge will spread nationwide as councils struggle to balance their budgets . It's not in Wigan yet though ! :blue thumb:

My council, Thanet District Council charge for bins & bags that have been lost; us residents don't lose them, the bin men don't return them despite having the house address plastered all over them. On the Council website it states that if incorrect bins or bags are used the bin men won't take the rubbish/recycle and you could be taken to court if you don't buy the correct items.

The Council's refuse fleet operates from Woolston - know the area quite well.

It was the M56 for me - always busy even at 6.30 am when I was trying to get into Warrington.

I think that we both had a lucky escape :blue thumb: - I'm told that Warrington is gridlocked due to traffic avoiding the Mersey Gateway tolls. This on top of the road improvement works that are closing off main roads :spinning:.

I can understand councils not including it in the general rate. Those and there must be many, ratepayers who live in flats without a garden, woulds be a bit peeved if they were charged for the collection of garden waste.

The biggest rip-off is "water rates." At one time, I can remember it being included in the general rate. We were a bit miffed when it went to an additional charge of £15 annually. Then of course came "privatisation." Utilities sold off cheaply and householders subsequently ripped off. I'm now paying £836 a year for water and sewerage, so I make sure I get my money's worth. My koi pool has a 24/7 trickle change and I have lawn sprinklers and a leaky hose system for all the garden borders.

Actually, green wast collection is not a separate charge here in Cheshire, Riley. The rates are universal in charge so whether or not green waste is collected the Rates stay the same. Obviously water is more valuable your way as I only pay £600:dunno::heehee:

                    Ahh!

                    Those were the days!

When we first moved up here we were in Cheshire. Then we "moved" to Trafford.
Still in the same house though.

                      He has posher water. :heehee:

We're on a water meter and use quite a lot of water because We use the sprinkler a lot. This last year we paid £360 - but we don't pay sewage rates. Our annual charge was much higher when we didn't have the meter because the charge depended on the rateable value of the property.

The argument about cost for removing green waste is always a difficult one. I would feel aggrieved if I didn't have a garden and was paying for green waste disposal BUT I pay for schools and don't have children, pay towards all the street lighting through the district but we only have three street lights in 2 miles of road etc.

Despite the change in the border, my bank which was "moved" from Cheshire to Trafford, still issued cheque books with the original Cheshire address on them for several years after the change. Many local residents still consider they live in Cheshire, as Trafford is actually the other side of Stretford and closer to Manchester City Centre than it is to us.
