      We used to chat to the lamplighter when coming out of school on winter afternoons. :blue thumb:

      That picture is an interesting one as it's a more modern one. The original lamplighters didn't have the technology shown in that picture. Originally, the lamplighter had to carry a ladder to access the lever to turn on the gas before lighting it. The ladder used to be propped against the crossbar that was there for that purpose. The long pole came later and had a hook on the end to pull the ring that was on a small chain that dangled from the gas tap. It made the work much quicker and resulted in a lamplighter being given more lamps to light in the same time. It also saved him having to carry a ladder.

        Re addresses:- The name of our road is the name of the town two miles away, the village named in our address is not the parish that we belong to as our parish is the next village along (we have to go through the village of our address to get to our parish church :scratch:), the town in our address is seven miles away (not the one two miles away) and we live in different county from the one in our address. The town which is the base of our district council, to whom we pay our rates, is 12 miles away and we have to go through two other district councils to get there!

        So, years ago, I declared Shineyland independent. :snorky:

          The Lamplighter
          poem
          My tea is nearly ready and the sun has left the sky;
          It’s time to take the window to see Leerie going by;
          For every night at teatime and before you take your seat,
          With lantern and with ladder he comes posting up the street.

          Now Tom would be a driver and Maria go to sea,
          And my papa’s a banker and as rich as he can be;
          But I, when I am stronger and can choose what I’m to do,
          Oh Leerie, I’ll go round at night and light the lamps with you!

          For we are very lucky, with a lamp before the door,
          And Leerie stops to light it as he lights so many more;
          And O! before you hurry by with ladder and with light,
          O Leerie, see a little child and nod to him tonight!

            I watched the highlights of the golf on BBC TV tonight. They got a day's play into 45 minutes. But we still had suffer during that time about half a dozen "how did you feel?" interviews with some players when they'd finished their round.

            Most viewers who are golfers don't actually care "how they felt." They'd rather see more golf.

            I rarely watch it because I can't stand the smarmy patronising git who presents the BBC's "Points of View." But it appears there were several complaints about the commentary team for the Royal Wedding. Smarmy git patronisingly pointed out that those who didn't want the commentary could have watched the coverage on the "red button," which had no added commentary or distractions.

            All I can say is that the BBC didn't promote this facility enough, because I was unaware of it. Not once during the programme did I hear one of the irritating presenters mention this facility.
            Probably because it would embarrass the BBC if many switched over.

            Watching the Open Tennis from Paris, there's Serena Williams in a black cat suit. It's doing nothing for her appearance.

            Looking at her proportions, I'm reminded of this.

              Actually, I like Serena and thought that for a 36 year old mother she looked well in the Catsuit. She's never been a petite person and it takes a lot to come back after having a baby.:love30::snorky:

                I disagree, she looked terrible. The catsuit just emphasised her weight.

                "A lot?"

                Of course lots of female sports stars have come back after having a baby, the list is endless, she's just more high profile than some.
                Jessica Ennis had "Reggie" in 2014 and won the World Championships Heptathlon in 2015, having completely regained her figure through sheer hard work. No big deal really for her and none of the tabloid fuss.

                Williams looks considerably over-weight and has lost her speed, doesn't do a lot of running, she relies on her impressive power and accuracy, which is making up for it, in the early rounds.

                There's always a motive behind changes in sportswear, it's all about marketing. The "swoosh," on the front of her chest couldn't have been more noticeable. But the outfit is doing her no favours, but then she's always been one for sponsorships.

                I'd be surprised if she were allowed to wear a white catsuit at Wimbledon.
                Roland Garros is different, it's "come as you please," there.

                Had a struggle against the 17th seed, Ashley Barty. 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Much tougher rounds to come.

                Well @Doghouse Riley - it might have been better if you had left this with a funny tape of Kenny Everett. Your last post just makes you sound a bit bitchy. Have you had a bad day ?

                  Your last remarks were unnecessarily personal. When have I ever been like that with you?

                  Check Serena out on Wiki, as far as sponsorships go, she's "a walking billboard."
                  In my opinion, Nike will have probably talked her into wearing that ridiculous outfit for a considerable amount of money. It did nothing for her and even less for tennis.

                  Here's the Nike PR nonsense. I didn't realise "Ideation," was an actual word.

                  I think if you asked Jennifer Ennis, Serena Williams, Shelley Rudman, Sarah Wiltshire, Helen Jenkins if they thought it was no big deal, Riley, you might get a different answer. I can't see how any of us males can understand, or appreciate, to any degree any woman going through pregnancy, labour, birth, caring for a child while trying to get back to a normal worklife. For a female sports athlete it must be even harder to have to get back to the high level of fitness that they have to achieve. I, personally, take my hat off to any sportswoman who has that experience whilst under public view and being criticised for not looking like a fashion model.:dunno::coffee:

                    The marketing world, Riley, like it or not, has supplied a veritable mountain of mutations of words, straplines, and catch words to the English language as a dip into the Oxford Dictionary will show.:dunno::snorky: The words don't have to make literal sense but just supply a sense of meaning or connection to whatever subject is being targeted.:snorky:
