I hate the way everything is described as a 'crisis'!

Have to agree with you @shiney re our language. I know language has evolved over the years and continues to do so but just sometimes i feel like screaming when it is abused. My personal pet hate is the misuse of lovely. "He did that lovely":gaah:. I'm off out into the garden as it is a lovely day:).

I'm surprised how there are so many "devastated" people around.
Everyone interviewed about a "Crisis" is always "devastated".

Another word that is misused, but understandably, is decimate. It is now used a lot to imply something being ripped to shreds - or similar. In actual fact it comes from the Roman Legion (I remember it well :old: :heehee:) meaning to remove one in ten.

@shiney I did not know that.

I dislike that the new dictionaries do not show the enunciation of words. I had to go online to find out why I had been mispronouncing capillary. Found out that the stress in the "pill" part is British/military and the way I was saying it with the "CAP" and end in "lairy" is very Merikan :)

I'm glad I am not alone with grammar niggles - when I was watching the BBC News yesterday morning about the events in Indonesia, they had a correspondent reporting via video link; she was referring to the number of people that had died, and said that "the numbers have rised up"

Now, my grammar is far from perfect, but 'rised up'?? Rised isn't even a word!! This is the BBC for goodness sake. :gaah:

I purposely ignore spelling and grammar (drove my elder sister mad, she was an English teacher!!) but I am Carols' resident "spell checker", so I can get it right when I have to.

Edit, ENGLISH spell checker (from England)!

So why say Elevator when "lift" will do?

We literally have dozens of Stables around here in West Cheshire and most drivers act sensibly when trying to pass riders and horses. But yesterday I came across a young girl who had to dismount her grey horse which spooked when it met a huge Tractor of the local farm on the road. It really didn't like the size of the massive machine being so close to it and to give the girl credit she made the decision of dismount and control the skittish horse by the reins while safely on the ground. Luckily the Stables entrance was just in front of my halted car and the Tractor which had also stopped when the Farmer saw what was happening. The girl and horse made it safely across the road and into the Stables before we started off again.:coffee:

Around here almost everyone is considerate and friendly. They stop their cars to let you out, creep along at only five miles an hour near horses, and greet you when you're out walking. :blue thumb:

Dreaming of living in a leafy village just reminded me of a major gripe I have.
We live in a town but are lucky enough to have lots of green space and trees around. Fabulous, you might think, not when it's conker season
The delightful offspring of the ' couldn't care less' ( minority, thankfully) take great pleasure in trying to cause maximum window damage. Tonight the pelting lasted about 20 minutes, on and off!
:dunno: Call me old fashioned but we used to put a string through them and play Conkers?:dunno:

I sometimes wonder if horses should be on roads these days, I dont think it's safe for traffic and definitely not for horses, often see kids riding horses on roads around here, the horse is often scared of the traffic.
I cant see why land owners cant get themselves sorted out and create bridleways across their land so that horses dont have to go on busy roads, lets face it even lanes are busy around here.

Quite often I come across this idiot driving one of those contraptions with two wheels and the horse seems to trot like crazy, not sure what you call them.
He seems to take it out during rush hour times just to be a total pain.
You can see he enjoys the traffic jam behind him, while the poor old horse gets spooked by loads of traffic trying to get passed.
                                Total maniac.
