There may be many things which are much worse than in England, weather most of the time being 1! However, the legal process of selling property up here in Scotland is far far better. If you put in an offer and it is accepted you will have a serious problem getting out of it and the financial penalties for reneging are pretty draconian.I really don't understand why the rest of the UK don't use our system. I have experience of selling/buying in England, a complete minefield and extremely stressful. I hope you told the people to go and get stuffed:) @Loofah

There may have been some venting of the spleen... and completely agree about the Scottish system - so much better than England's!

Here, if you (the Buyer) make an offer on a property and it is accepted you must pay 10% down and sign a Promissory Contract. If you back out you LOSE your 10%. If the Seller backs out, they have to DOUBLE the deposit. And the whole process is fairly swift by agreement between the parties. They don't play games here! :paladin:

That sounds similar to here @Victoria ie stopping people being "at it" and trying to be too damned smart for their own good. I will never forget how my Mum was pulling her hair out and getting very upset when selling her house near Pinner (northern suburb of London) prior to moving back home to Scotland. She had only ever experienced the property buying and selling process in Scotland before. She had a sale or so she thought, organised for the removal to Scotland to take place only for the purchaser to pull out of the sale at the last minute and THEN have the nerve to try and gazunder? her when he found out she was all ready to move back home. Luckily she could afford to tell him to get knotted and even said to him she would never sell to him even if he offered her the earth for her house.
Talk about making a very stressful process even worse. The house went back on the market and sold for more than she had originally agreed with the sharp operator, so it benefited her in the long run altho that said it probably took ten years off her life with all the unpleasantness. I wanted to go round to the man's house and give him a piece of my mind for being so unfair but was persuaded not to. Still think I should have been allowed to give him both barrels, even if it meant I had to take a short holiday in Holloway Prison:).

The other week we took a guest to Anglesey Abbey (NT) to see their excellent winter garden. I was rather shocked that they have now done away with their garden only ticket and made it into a full ticket (house and garden) at £15 per head. Not very good if you only want to visit the garden.

I know some of the local gardening clubs have cancelled their planned visit to the garden and shall be going elsewhere. I was also going to arrange a GC visit to the garden but shan't bother now. :noidea:

They're doing it to raise their income as they are doing a lot of improvements but that's no real excuse from a garden lover's point of view. Gardens are changing all year round whereas the house remains almost the same. So I've had my fill of the house! And told them so. :heehee:

As members it makes no difference to us but certainly makes a difference if we want to bring visitors.

Some NT properties charge members a fee for entrance to the 'house', the reason for this being they are so popular that advance bookings for allocated times are essential, and far too many NT members were making bookings (especially for prime times) but not turning up, causing not only a large loss of income from non-NT nembers, but also depriving other NT members of the opportunity to visit.

We've just come back from one such property, but we'd been given complementary house tickets (free is my favourite price).
