I see. I think the reason I'm puzzled as that this seems a recent thing. We never used to have to do this. And with the internet, it's easy enough to find out what can and can't be sent to any country. A lot easier than it used to be. And as the parcels are being scanned anyway, it's just an invitation for one dishonest person to nick the parcel.

I don't know, just one more daft rule in a world full of them.

    Hi Laura,
Customs declaration forms have always had to be attached to packages under international agreement.

The wording on the outside of the package (declaration) makes a big difference to whether it's allowed or needs to carry tax. If worded correctly, with no lies, then everything will be OK.

Here's some extracts from the details:-

2.3 What are the limits for customs duty and import VAT?

The limits for customs duty and import VAT are:

    • commercial consignments, that is, goods you have purchased, of £15 or less are free from Customs Duty and import VAT. Note: This doesn’t include alcohol, tobacco products, perfume or toilet waters, these items are excluded from the relief of duty and VAT at import. In addition, commercial consignments sent to the UK from the Channel Islands don’t benefit from any relief of import VAT
    • if you’re sent a gift with a value of £39 or less, which complies with the rules shown in paragraph 2.4, it will be free from Customs Duty and import VAT (gifts of alcohol, tobacco, perfumes and toilet waters are subject to the limits shown in paragraph 2.5, while gifts of perfumes and toilet waters are subject to the limits in paragraph 2.6)
    • Customs Duty becomes payable if the value of the goods is over £135
    In summary:

    Goods Value* Customs Charges applicable
    £0.01 to £15 - No customs duty
    - No Import VAT**
    £15.01 to £135 - No customs duty
    - Import VAT due
£135.01 and greater - Customs duty due,
    - Import VAT due
*Excludes the following goods: alcohol, tobacco products, perfumes and toilet waters. These items don’t benefit from the relief of customs duty or VAT at import, and alcohol and tobacco products will also be liable to Excise Duty. **Commercial consignments sent to the UK from the Channel Islands don’t benefit from relief of import VAT.

There are a number of other circumstances where relief from some or all customs charges may be available. If you think your goods may be eligible for a relief you can contact the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) Customs, International Trade and Excise enquiries service by phone on 0300 200 3700 for further information.

Further ways to contact HMRC for general advice and information on imports can be found on the GOV.UK website.

    2.4 Gifts
Goods sent as a gift that are over £39 in value are liable to import VAT, Customs Duty also becomes payable if the value of the goods is over £135.

    To qualify as a gift:

    • the customs declaration must be completed correctly
    • the gift must be sent from a private person outside the EU to a private person(s) in this country
    • there is no commercial or trade element and the gift hasn’t been paid for either directly or indirectly by anyone in the UK
    • the gift is of an occasional nature only, for example, for a birthday or anniversary
Note: if you purchase something from outside the EU to give as a gift to a relative or friend, whether or not addressed to that person, it is treated as a ‘commercial consignment’ for which the import VAT relief threshold in paragraph 2.3 applies.

A friend in Africa used to send illegal stuff in small packages marked "small wood carving enclosed" and they all got through OK, but one day another such package arrived that was marked as 'opened by customs' and I tore it open expecting a police raid at any minute, only to find inside ....... a small wooden carving - phew!

Just a quick update on the farce (which Brian Rix would be proud of, if you are old enough to remember who he was!) with Hermes.
I got a message yesterday from the sender that Hermes were admitting they had lost my parcel and were asking them to make a claim. Ok bad enough but at least there is some progress.
However at 8.45 this am what do I get but an email saying Hermes were going to be delivering my parcel between 9 am and 1pm.... I will leave it up to you to guess whether I have got my parcel or not:rolleyespink::yikes:.

I really don't understand why companies still use Hermes as a courier, they are hopeless!

The saga continues, Hermes "tried" to deliver the parcel yesterday...my aunt fanny.... and yup they are now going to deliver it today between 2 and 6pm. I am NOT holding my breath on this 1. This will be according to their fantasy records the 6th time they have attempted delivery. How do these companies survive with such appalling service? they will never get any of my business again that's for sure.

Sorry, I can't help you @Snorky85. But if you intend to proceed with this and fellow GC members can help you, I suggest that happens privately not on open forum as it could put you in a difficult position if lawyers are involved.

As if the day couldn’t get any worse. Found out my bro is having his doggy put to sleep on Friday. Ben is 14 years old black lab but quite poorly. Weve had him since he was a tiny pup. I will miss him so much.

And now I’ve got a migraine.

Sorry to hear your brother is having to love a best friend. Hugs to you. :cry3:

Ditto Snorky. I learnt to walk hanging onto my Mum and Dad's wonderfully patient black Lab. Such gentle dogs! But best not to let him suffer. Hope the migraine's better :grphg:
