The last time I was in a Tesco was on the 17th Feb 2004, the day my daughter was born, never been in one since. I had a big bust up with the store manager, they were doing a number of items on 3 for 2, yet on checking my receipt I was charged full price. When I went back in to question it the girl at the checkout said the promotions had ended, on checking the promotion labels they had ended, but you don't expect a promotion to be still on display when one had expired 24 hours ago and the other over 36 hours.

When I asked to speak to the store manager, they said I should of read the promotion, which caused me to flip. I went back to the car and brought all the shopping back for a full refund.
I pointed out, that you would be breaking the law by having food on display if the use by date had expired, so it's your duty to make sure the same applies to promotions.

Paper bags, hmm. Deforestation, would it be stopped or accelerate if we all switched to paper bags and timber buildings. I know France is to pass legislation that all new public buildings have to be built with 50% timber, if we all adopted this approach have we been planting enough tree's to meet the demand? Like the electric car, will the infrastructure and supply be in place by 2030.

I was reading an article last year that Morrisons were looking to be the first supermarket to scrap the bag for life and have heavy duty paper bags at 30p per bag in all their stores. I don't know what they mean by stopping the sales of, "bags for life", in their stores, we have about eight of those pp woven bags, which I would class as the, "bag for life", we have no intentions of switching, they will last us for many many more years.

When I get potatoes or other loose veg from the supermarket, I put a paper bag inside another or use more bags but put less in them, if I don't they have ended up on the floor or rolling all over the conveyor when the bag has burst, embarrassing.

How do you put loose veg through these self check out services? Our local Morrisons has more self checkouts now than staffed ones. I have never used one of these self checkouts, there probably would end up being a queue a mile long behind me if I did.

When I go to Tesco/Sainsbury's (no Morrisons around here) I use the self checkout - but the one where you use the gun to register your food as you go round. That way everything gets put directly into my bags as I take them from the shelf and don't have to queue to check out.

Loose veg/fruit is put on the scales nearby and the machine prints out a little label with a bar code which I then zap with the gun. At the special checkouts for the zappers :heehee: I have never had to queue and I zap the screen and then pay by touchless card. No unpacking of trolley and then loading into my bags. In and out of the store very quickly and keeping away from other people - especially those that won't wear a mask!

For the main shop I use an IKEA bag. It's about the same size as the trolley :) love the zappers too so there's a few things supermarkets get right but there's a lot of room for improvement

Paper bags seem counter productive from a sustainability point of view.

I have a car full of 'bags for life'. In the early days they were given away free and we had one from each supermarket/food shop (one of each in both our cars plus a whole stack of them from the co-op when they changed their colour of bag and they gave them to us to sell our plants for charity). We used the co-op ones for what they wanted and kept one each.

Almost all those original bags are still in use (some must be 20 years old) so 'bag for life' is a pretty good title.

I use plastic crates that Safeway gave away at one point for my shopping.
                Got about 5 of them.

The local Co-op have done this about half a dozen times in the last decade, with at least as many changes of around half the store in the same period of time! It's infuriating and always adds a minimum of 5 minutes to my shopping time for a couple of months. Incredibly inconvenient and time-wasting if one is busy. It has put me off shopping there most of the time, so their loss. Thank goodness that I also have a small Spar in my village and much more importantly, a fantastic Sainsbury's online shopping and delivery service! Tried doing my online shopping with Co-op once and boy, did I regret that. No option to not allow substitutes, so half the shopping was substitutes and I was expected to return what I didn't want at the doorstep!

Sainsburys are very efficient in our area too. We like our online service from them.
We still like to pop in most of the others from time to time because they all have their particular merits.
I've had a big SDS drill bought from Aldi around 5 years ago for £30 that still runs like new.
There's no wall it won't zip straight through.
Morrisons do a nice barley loaf that i like.
Since lockdown the stores that I've visited have shut down their salad bars and deli counters.. I hope these are restored in time, fingers crossed. Sainsburys deli served the most sumptuous chicken tikka samosa and i can't get them now arghh!
My wife's a good cook but she says they are too tricky to make at home.

They do a very nice version that you can just pop in the oven for 15 mins in 4-packs mate, but I'm afraid I can't comment on how they compare to the deli variety you're used to as I've never tried them. :dunno: Must admit that even tho I'm not a big fan of curries usually (more into European/Mediterranean cuisine), some of the tinned curries from Sainsbury's are delicious, so tasty that I often don't even bother having them with rice! Their Beef Madras and Chicken Balti are lovely, the former being about as spicy as I like to go, but still find enjoyable. And their Chicken Jalfrezi isn't bad either. :)

When it comes to Italian the wife is an expert. Her lasagne is so good. She can also wizz up a tagliatelle with tomatoes leeks, basil, mushrooms and a sprinkle of cheese.. Bliss

This is why there was a massive wobbly about those CO2 factories shutting down - followed by Boris throwing a load of cash at them to continue production.

Look at a bag of prepacked salad - open the bag - let the CO2 out and air in - it goes brown within hours.

I was a bit surprised that we have so few CO2 making companies in the UK - it's fairly important to our food industry.
