I think you've been stung @pete. The cost of bags and delivery against use of your own fuel? Then those bags are expected to be given back to the driver? You can almost guarantee there won't be decent use by dates on the food either. Tesco are bad with their dates at the best of times but the 'pickers' don't bother to check those or the state of any pre-packed food. They just take the nearest to hand.

I've never had a home delivery and watching the 'pickers' in the shop - it will never happen.

We have a Sainsbury delivery once a fortnight and I go shopping in between. I don't order fruit or veg for delivery but other things are OK. I have a 'no bag' delivery where they bring them to the door in their big boxes and I have small boxes in the front porch where they put the delivery. Any frozen goods or meats are sealed in carrier bags, no charge.

There's no delivery charge but I think it's because my order reaches a certain price level and we have the delivery off peak - 6.30 a.m. on a Thursday. I always tick the box 'No substitutes' on their web site.

I've had Tesco delivering once a week for over a decade and am very happy with it. Monthly delivery fee for as many loads as I wish is under £7.

Substitutions are my favourite as they have a policy to give a better deal with them. If the 500g pack of mince I ordered is not available, they'll give me 750g for the same price. My Tesco brand biscuits got swapped for branded ones (making me feel momentarily posh ;) ) The only totally failed substitution was when I ordered 1kg ham joint for a roast and got... 5 200g packs of thinly sliced ham slices.

If an item has shorter use-by date than expected, it's called out on the top of the receipt. Any unwanted items can be handed back to the driver who scans them off your bill and often hand them back if they are perishables that would otherwise get binned.

The best thing is that my weekly shop takes less than half an hour. It would take me longer to even get to a store, and as I don't drive, hauling the heavy or bulky stuff home would be a drag.

As a back up plan I sometimes order from Morrisons via Amazon prime. Same day delivery at zero cost- can't fault that one if I suddenly fancy a bottle of wine and some cheese on a Sunday afternoon. :)

It would have been difficult to give any thing back to the driver.
The door bell rang and I got up and straight to the door.
The bags were all on the front door step and the driver was in the street closing up his van.
He shouted, that's the lot there, and drove off.

This morning's delivery was complete. :blue thumb:

I stopped substitutions when I got a tin of cat food instead of 500gm of mince!

I also remember a report on the radio of a woman getting a Twix instead of Tampax :yikes:

              That is very bad pete..
We did online shopping during the 1st lockdown using Asda ( my siblings and I all use different shops so we could all benefit from a shared selection) and had no problem at all . We selected a ' no bag' shop and had containers ready to transfer the items into. Any subs were always equal or better quality/ size.

My Sister uses Tesco and has the same positive experience that @Selleri has described.

Sainsburys on the whole were OK...just lots of subs made.

Tesco have been excellent for us, we tick the box for items that we don't want substitutes for and hand back any short date items which is rare. Substitutes are great as we got two books of first class stamps for the price of second, we always do better.

Our Sainsburys deliveries arrive in big plastic boxes. The driver puts them on the door step and we empty them while he fetches some more. When all is emptied he takes all the boxes back for re use. If there's any plastic bags holding small items in the boxes they are free. Btw i love smoked haddock so i can guess your disappointment.

I've had Iceland deliveries since 2019, no charge for delivery if you order over £35.
Never had a problem, I will certainly be given the driver an Xmas tip.

They were giving these away free during lockdown #1. We accumulated enough to leave for our grandchildren in our wills They are not a very useful shape apart from keeping wellies in the car boot.

Our gas oven thermostat has broken. The oven still works but the temperature control doesn't - I think. It doesn't seem to be affecting my cooking :heehee:.

It's surprising how few people will work on a gas range cooker . I'll start phoning contacts today.
