Not a moan really, but has anyone been watching Wimbledon this year.
Only I'm wondering if they have changed the rules on tie breaks, I seem to remember it was the first one to reach 7 but must be two points ahead of the other player. ie. 7-5

It seems it just the first one to reach 7 that wins the set now.
So they are winning tie breaks with a scoreline of 7-6 points.

What? Apart from cricket this must be one of the British peculiarities rarely seen elsewhere.

I could be wrong, is it the deciding set only, where a player must win by two points on a tie breaker.

Well I was under the impression it was always two points, otherwise it gives the one who serves first in the tie break the advantage of winning the set.

Tie break comes in these days a 6 games all, but I think it may come in after a few more games on the final set, but I could be wrong, they seem to keep changing the rules to make the matches shorter.
They could achieve that much more by stopping them bouncing the ball about 15 times before every serve.:frown:

They might do, was there not a match that went on for 11 hours, Wimbledon would last for months if you had a high proportion of games lasting hours. I am a big Leeds Utd fan and have travelled all over to watch them in my younger days. I never liked extra time back then and I still don't, would rather a match went straight to pens if a match finishes all square in cup competitions.

Yeah, some of the Wimbledon matches did get over long, but they brought in the tie break to stop that, which it has pretty much done.
I dont watch much football, might have a look in tomorrow night if I'm not doing anything much,, but I think you are right 90 minutes and to end up a draw, is, enough is enough.
Maybe all drawn league matches should be decided on penalties, would make the games more interesting.

The tie break is still as it was Pete, ie you need to be 2 points ahead. The score line shows 7/6 which is games not points if this makes sense. I think the tie break is a good thing except in the final set where I agree with Becker. I do not think a whole match could be decided on effectively a 2 point difference even if it is 12 all in the case of Wimbledon ( other tournaments have different tie break rules)Certainly the advent of the tie break ended the days of never ending men’s doubles. I can remember years ago having Centre Court tickets and after a fairly swift women’s singles a men’s doubles took up the whole of the rest of the day’s play. Eventually we could not stand it any longer and went out to watch another match on the outside courts.

Yes I agree, a never ending match is only good up to a point, after that it gets boring.
I know the score board shows 7-6 etc. But I could almost swear on two occasions now at 6-6 points in the tie break the commentator has called it set point .

You could well be right but they aren’t! Some of the commentary is very good some not so. Annabelle Croft was never known for being bright:whistle:.However one chooses to remember McEnroe, he to my mind is the best commentator and calls a spade a shovel when necessary. Some commentators try to be so PC re a player who is playing like a lemon.
Ok nobody likes to look like an idiot in front of millions of people but the amounts of money the players get nowadays allows them to cry all the way to the bank. This years women’s final was dreadful yet the runner up gets just shy of £1,000,000. Wish I made that kind of money when making a you know what up of something. Bit off topic so will shut up!:)

I didn't see the women's final, I'll probably be out of order but only rarely does women's tennis come up to the mark.
It's a bit slow and ponderous, but then they are a bit better than me at it.
Also I get fed up with all the loud noises they make every time they hit the ball, that goes for men and women.

I remember seeing Rod Laver being given a point he obviously felt he didn´t deserve.
Then his opponent served, and Laver calmly ignored it, to put things right.
                      Most impressive, I thought.

Despite being of the same gender, I would have to agree Pete with one exception for quite a few years, however, sadly Father Time has caught up with her. Love or hate her, Serena Williams was neither a bit slow nor ponderous. She served faster and hit the ball harder than most men.For many years it must have been terrifying to face her down the other end of the court:).
