I've listened to clips of the business secretary talking about energy yesterday and it appeared to boil down to "We need to stop relying on cheap immigrant power and improve pay and conditions to recruit more local power"

I think they call that mixed messaging.

 

Yes we're fortunate in that with hubs having almost rebuilt all of our house he was able to oversee and ensure that our house was well insulated too.

I was just amazed at what the women said. I certainly don't expect to be able to continue wearing t shirts and shorts in the middle of winter....is it really too astonishing to have to wear a jumper or cardigan in winter!!!!!

Like you @shiney I can definitely recall having ice on the inside of our windows when I was a child too. My sister and I use to chip it all off from bedroom widows, then Mum would find a soaking wet mess later when she came to tidy up and make our beds....thankfully, more often than not, we were both safely at school!!!!

 

I actually see her point ... maybe she is already wearing a jumper but does not want a cardigan on in addition inside. As Pete says, British homes are not insulated properly. I lived with my Aunt and Uncle and they bought a new bungalow in 1959 and we had ice inside the windows. Houses here are not insulated. Our is old with 60cm thick clay and stone walls ... lovely and cool in summer, cold in winter unless you get them heated through. And we have fully tiled/marble floors and fully tiled bathrooms and kitchens ... brrrr!

 

House is fairly well insulated, I've also got the kit from trekking in Nepal, down jacket, down sleeping bag (good down to -10°C), thick socks and woolly jumpers.

 

My house is well insulated and probably that is because it is the law. The cellar has to be insulated down to the frost line - approx 30" below grade. It is still not air tight but sufficient.

We've also been told that heating bills (natural gas central heat) will be going up dramatically. And the big fan that keeps the air circulating being electric, costs a fair bit to run during the day as that is the highest rate for electric power with our time of use rates.

I'd rather pay than be cold. Daytime I keep things around 72f, night 68f. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd keep the house at 74f all day.

 

I tend to feel comfortable at about 72f, but the bedroom is usually lower.
During prolonged cold spells it can get down to 63f up there but I don't like it any colder than that.

Got the new insulated roof on the conservatory so hoping that helps it keep warmer in there, or less heating really.

 

We hardly ever have heating on in our bedroom, last year I think it was only on for two nights. Never like it warm , although the other bedrooms are on when the children were / are home. Although I like to be warm and I moan about our winter weather, I don't like the feel of an overly hot house. My Dad had his very warm ,but obviously being elderly he needed it to be do, likewise my brother too his seems to be constantly on and he continues wearing t-shirts....that sort of environment is not healthy, even his poor budgie moults like hell in winter, surprised he has any feathers left come Spring!
