My daughter has informed me that Uni staff are planning strike action in Feb & March, apparently 18 days in total. My daughter reckons that it will equate to her only having one 2 hour class a week. What's the point in her being in Uni, the students should be reimbursed a percentage of the student fee's when they start to payback the loans.

What a coincidence @Jiffy . It's my son-in-law's birthday today and believe it or not his surname is Cattle. :)

I had a routine blood test last week, I got a call at 6pm saying my cholesterol is slightly high and they want me to talk to someone next week about taking statins.

Lo and behold the story on the news tonight about them wanting to put 15 million, (cant remember the actual amount), more people on statins.

        What is going on?

My old GP tried to put me on statins a few years ago for no apparent reason and I told him no, not without a good reason which didn't go down well.

A mate I worked with, until he retired, was put on statins and he's now been told they have wasted his muscles away and its incurable.

The thing is I have a few other medical problems I'd like to get sorted out first but they are not interested in them, but something that is not making my life a misery, they want to treat.

I do get the fact that it is so called preventative but its also obviously blood cheap otherwise they wouldn't be interested in that either.

There's a theory going around that the doctors get a kickback from the drug companies for it. I have no idea whether it's correct.

Over the years I've watched the recommended cholesterol levels drop from 7.5 to the current 4.9 with some doctors looking at 3.5 as the new level. Some people get on very well with them and others get quite a lot of side effects, mainly aches and pains in the legs and other muscles. If that happens you should go to your doc and they will change the type of statin you are on.

If you have any heart problems then you should follow the doc's suggestion that you take them. Otherwise, I'm of the same opinion as yourself that I want to keep off as many drugs as possible. Instead, I try to eat a healthy diet with only an occasional visit to the chippy :heehee:.

The other year, when out shopping, I popped into an NHS caravan cholesterol testing centre. The medic there did a number of tests on me, weighed me etc. and said that my cholesterol levels were a bit higher than the current expected level and he 'has to' recommend that I go to my doctor with the test results and the doc will probably tell me to have statins. Whilst he was saying he 'has to recommend' he was looking straight at me and shaking his head from side to side . As I was going out he said that my levels were lower than his and he wasn't on them.

I took the results to a friend of mine who used to be a well known medical drug researcher and designer and is on statins and is a sprightly 93 years old. He looked at my report and said that as I eat a healthy diet he couldn't see any reason for me to be on statins - but it would depend on whether there are signs of other problems, mainly heart, that might change that opinion.

I was put on Atorvastatin 40mg late August due to an MRI showing I had had several mini strokes (unbeknownst to me) not recent but the possible/probable cause of my falls a couple of years ago. I felt very nauseas for weeks then my calf muscles hurt so I cut the tablet in half and within days felt great. Last month I went for a Carotoid Ultrasound which showed my arteries are completely clear. I also saw my Neurologist who gave me another six-month of Atorvastatin and 150mg Aspirin (Statin at night Aspirin in the morning). I told him I was cutting the Statin in half and why and he said okay. I take no other drugs, just supplements, Vitamins, Calcium/D3 etc.

Statins are cheap so I don't see where Big Pharma is making a killing. With the world's obesity problem, I can see why Statins are 'popular' with doctors.

The thing that bothers me is my legs ache already and have done for years, due to back problems and knees i assume.
Although the knee operation has relieved the grinding in the one knee it hasn't stopped the ache in both my lower legs and feet.

Pete, I have a circulation maxx machine which I am sitting with my feet on now. It gets the circulation going in your legs which helps relieve aches/tightness. Don't know if you would be interested in this ...

Statins didn't agree with hubs so he's now on a more expensive version and has been for a couple of years now. Thing is statins are cheap so they are always the first port of call. Hubs is also on something else for his heart too ,( can't recall the names of his meds) , he is now aiming to reduce one of them soon, under medical supervision of course.:dbgrtmb:

Don't laugh, but I went and bought one of those things Ian Botham advertises ,I'm getting desperate.

I've only had it a week, I've not noticed any difference yet.

It gives you small electric shocks and makes your muscles contract.

My problem appears to be very tight hamstrings in both legs which appears to cause plantar fasciitis.

Unfortunately there seems little concrete proof of any sound benefits of using them . I was advised against them by my consultant because of past ( minor) leg blood clots. I have a foot bath with vibrating mode and shouldn't use that either ( not that I ever had as I was always wary of the function)

Revitive? The expensive one! I have seen the ads but didn't know who he was!

I found it difficult in the beginning getting the settings I like. Assuming they are the same, mine automatically comes on for 25 minutes. I settled on Mode 13 (how it pulses/whatever) and strength/intensity generally 50 but have been up as high as 90. It is a trial and error. I use it every morning when I get up after I have walked 100 steps (with the walker) as I am Miss Creaky first thing.

Not sure about the hamstrings but imagine it would help. I had plantar fascitis a couple of years ago so can empathise but just kept exercising my feet and got my machine then (July 2020). My machine has a roller on it too.
