    I gave up trying to feed everything a specialized mixture. Little and tall, they all get the same thing. Fertilizer put in the injector about once a month and distributed to everything. None of the plants have complained.

      I only use fertiliser on the veg, never give to garden ornamental plants, its just not necessary on my clay soil. I would like more garden compost or manure, but that is not easy to come by.

      I do use iron feeds but that is because I'm growing acid loving plants in not particully acid soil, but even then I find cold left over tea works quite well.

        I'm fortunate in having plenty of garden compost. :blue thumb: I used to have five 5ft x 5ft compost heaps but a lot of them have merged as the corrugated iron dividers have rotted away :rolleyespink:. They tend to start off at about 6ft high but quickly reduce to half that size. The veggies get most of it (a good 6" or more) and the rest gets spread around the garden when there is space for it.

        We have very few acid loving plants apart from some camellias and they do well on our clay based soil as they're surrounded by ferns (the fern fronds are slightly acidic) and backed by laurel whose roots produce a slight acidity.

          I use Growmore or pelleted chicken manure on vegetable and fruit plot fs; I use blood, fish and bone when planting shrubs and trees along with mycorrhizal fungi.
          potted plants get fed with either Miraclegro or Phostrogen as a liquid feed. I also use Tomorite once the tomatoes start to flower. The flower beds get mulched with garden compost.
          NPK comes from the element symbols for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K). Potassium being K is down to the New Latin "Kalium" related to the fact that potash gives an alkali solution. Potassium comes from Potash derived from burning wood, soaking the ash in water and then filtering and evaporating to get a salt known as potash used for soap and glass making.

            I forgot! :doh: Mrs Shiney uses Growmore in the greenhouse on tomatoes and chillies and on the patio in baskets and pots - not my department :heehee:

              Just listening to the TV news, fish and chips are going up in price.
              I'm sure he said 40% of our fish comes from Russian ships?

              So why do our fishermen send most of their catch to Europe?

              After the loss of the British deep water fishing fleet 1970s Cod Wars etc, we mainly have inshore boats and they catch a variety of fish few which of which are popular with the "fussy" Brits so it goes abroad. Lots of shellfish were shipped before Brexit not sur about now I know there were huge problems with mussels.
              The Russians have access to the deep cold waters of the Arctic which cod and other white fish like. Personally I don't believe the rumours that cod in the Barents Sea have numerous fingers, due to the Russian nuclear submarines dumped there.

                If we don't have the supply from Russian ships and only put what we catch on the shelves then the public will shift eventually.

                  I don't think they would, I hear lots of people say I don't eat fish because I don't like it.
                  Then you find they only ever bought fish fingers or
                  frozen mashed together, battered so called fillets.

                  Must admit some of the more unusual stuff is either full of bones or so expensive it's out of reach.
                  A lot of it is farmed anyway now but the fish and chip shop will always be cod haddock etc.

                    I'm a great fan of all seafood, also over the years I've had pike, zander, carp, eel etc.

                      I do miss my seafood feasts in the far east.

                      You can either choose a basket or fill your own, the basket prices start at about £30 up to £80.

                        As if things aren't bad enough I see the climate change loonies were out this morning trying to block off some oil refineries.
                        Next thing will be another run on the pumps, as expensive as it is people still need it.

                          You want to see the vast range of fertilisers to the commercial and professional sector then. Where I get my fertiliser they do 3 different blends of lawn food fertiliser for the retail sector, for groundsman they do 26 different blends of fertilisers. Even lawn sand, there is 2 different types for the retail sector yet 16 different blends for the professional sector.

                            I don't normally complain about elderly gentlefolk taking a long time to go through the checkout - but today was a doozy - this bloke was DELIBERATELY :stirpot: holding up the check out.

                            1 - took each item - individually - from his trolley and placed it carefully in line on the conveyor belt;
                            2 - waited until the cashier had processed his entire shop;
                            3 - carefully selected a carrier bag for his shopping;
                            4 - opened up the carrier bag;
                            5 - inspected the interior of the empty carrier bag;
                            5 - placed each time into the carrier bag - until half full;
                            6 - see 3.

                            After half packing 4 bags - he turned to me and gave me a nasty look (this is the bit that riled me - it takes a lot to annoy me - and I'm sad to say that is exactly what he did).

                            Apparently I was blocking his access to the debit card machine.

                            I returned his nasty look with one that would have made Paddington Bear proud.

                            After paying - he loitered around the end of the conveyor belt - adjusting the shopping bags in his trolley.

                            :please: God - don't let me end up like him - :please:.
