    This rail strike business. What they need to do is increase wages by 10% to get the railways moving again.

    It's only fair that employers should increase wages. Train drivers struggle to get by on close to £60k a year - I mean that's only twice as much as a nurse gets.

    The other advantages of increasing rail workers wages during a time of rampant inflation:

    - the cost of rail freight transport will increase to pay the 10%;
    - shops will increase their prices to pay for the 10% increase in transport costs;
    - rail workers will pay more to purchase their food;
    - those who have fixed incomes - eg. pensioners - can't go out on strike for a 10% increase - so they will just have to get by on less food.

    What's not to like? It's a win-win situation as far as I can see...:scratch:

      And the Goverment gets more in tax',vat etc

      I read some where so not sure if true that the Goverment got an extre £40 million just from the cost of fuel going up, i wonder just how much tax/vat the gov get in a single day?

        If the railway workers want to strike, then strike.
        This 3 days a week with a work day in between shouldn't be an option.

        They know they will achieve no useful work on the days they are back working but expect to get paid.
        Meanwhile the public have to put up with 7 days disruption a week.

        Personally I'd lock them out until it's settled, at least the loss of wages might just help in the negotiations and the public would know where they stand.

        They also seem to think they should all have a "job for life", I think reality needs to dawn on the union, that thinking went out about 40 years ago.

          I wonder how much effect the strike is having, most working people I know have simply gone back to working from home like in the lockdowns. Those workers who have to be in the workplace, nurses etc will find alternatives. The railway workers are shooting themselves in the foot as they did in the last major strike when haulage companies took over most of the train freight and that business never returned to the railways. Less passengers means less money means less jobs means rail closures. It's their last gasp, an inefficient industry that has never modernised and still acts as though it's nationalised and doesn't care less for their customers.

            I just hope the bus / coaching companies cash in on all of this, as did the haulage companies
            £55k train driver to £8k unemployment benefit should be a wake up call
            The less wealthy £24k staff will just have to retrain as call centre operators or go to the £8k benefit

              As I understand it the train drivers have a different union and they are not on strike, so presumably they are still getting paid during the strike days.
              Chances are they will be next if this lot get what they want.

              I agree people need a rise, but I can also see how too bigger rises will just stoke up inflation.

                Read this on the BBC website yesterday:
                The Chancellor has defended restoring the triple lock, which could see pensions rise by 10%. A Labour adviser said the constant protection of pensioners was Ludicrous.

                What a bar steward , I thought the Labour Party was for the working man and the less well off.

                  Is there a difference in parties now?

                  I think patience is exhausted with RMT strikes. The demands are bonkers and completely out of touch. I and everyone else I expect, recognise the need for adequate pay but this latest lot are already well paid and now demanding more. Maybe the government should turn round and say they give their demanded increases to nurses and teachers...

                    I think there are critics of this on both sides, i was listening to something yesterday and it tends to split, not unsurprisingly, by age.
                    The young are struggling and there are a lot of rich pensioners.
                    As usual every one gets lumped into a pigeon hole.

                    The suggestion was that it should be means tested, as usual the means test would be your bank account rather than your income.
                    So if you have saved ,when you can , you get penalised, as usual.

                      I have a mate, who despite getting his Government pension, plus two private pensions still moans that he doesn't have enough to live on.

                      Perhaps it's, I have quite a lot but I want more.

                        Our teaching assistants are pushing for a 10% pay raise. They now make $39k or £26k for an average of 20 hours per week with 12 weeks vacation time plus lots of long weekends etc.

                        And they don't need to have much more than a high school diploma!

                        Great money for a part time gig but no, they want more.

                          Do you really believe the conservatives and the pension tripple lock
                          They said that three years ago and when it came to it, it was cancelled
                          though they managed to pay billions of pounds out to fit workers to sit
                          at home during Furlough and did not even reduce the pay a little to take
                          into account no travelling expences

                          We have a local garage here who sell car batteries at £10 each when he has none
                          and £80 each when he has :-)

                            Furlough was 80% of wages Jack, but I do agree far too many people were on furlough for far too long.
                            At least we are better that China.
                            It was on the news tonight and they are still wandering around with masks and testing people on every street corner.
                            Very few people vaccinated, apparently, and because of all the lockdowns no immunity in the population.
                            Its almost the total opposite of how to deal with a pandemic, because as soon as they open the borders covid will run riot yet again.

                              I have the same and while not struggling I have to count every penny before making a choice purchase. Come the winter and increased heating bills I would be extremely grateful for another £67 per month on my old-age pension.

                                Made me laugh the other day, on the news they were interviewing a cross section of people about the rise in the cost of living lately . A young female student opened her food store cupboard to prove her point of how much she was ' suffering '.... all branded items!!!

                                Where there a will there's a way came to mind in this particular circumstance.

                                The joy of studentry is all about learning to budget and become inventive...;)...our brood had and still have all their Student Cookbooks and on how to survive healthily on a shoe string. Proud to say all 3 are brilliant cooks and can open a cupboard and rustle up a good meal from whatever they find.:)
