Cant say I like plastic cutlery anyway.

 

I agree that plastic needs to be eliminated where possible. Wooden cutlery is good but I cannot imagine much other than pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs or wraps that would be pleasant to eat with your hands. Imagine coney fries or poutine without some kind of utensil.

 

We've got steel cutlery. After use, we wash it, dry it, and stow it away in a drawer. Then when we next need cutlery, we take it out of the drawer.

If we eat out, the bar/restaurant usually has metal cutlery. That just disappears after use, but I suspect they do the same as us, but at a larger scale.

If we're going out for a picnic, we usually take sandwiches and fruit, and if we're at an outdoor event we'll usually grab a hotdog or burger or a tray of chips. We find fingers work perfectly well for such foods.

 

I had to look them up, dont think I would like soggy chips.

I think single use plastic is banned here, I know straws are ... I dislike straws but have a 200ml carton of chocolate milk every morning (I know, but it is for convenience) and they now have horrid little paper straws attached to them.

When I was in hospital with e-Coli my meals were served on paper plates and I had plastic cutlery and cups (and the Auxilliary wore a disposable gown, mask and gloves). When I tested clear (after about 5 days) I got real cutlery and china.

 

I feel an absolute horror at the mere thought of straws..even more so now they have...shudder shudder....I can hardly even speak the word..... reusable ones !!!!

 

I think you only reuse your own one.

But never like straws the drink never tastes the same.

 

Portugal Passes New Law To Stop Using Plastic

 

While on the subject of plastic, near me there is a large petrochemical works. They make all sorts but their main business is plastic. I worked there for a while and learned a thing or two (my role in IT is to understand where a business is wasting money and help them find efficiency savings). I learned that a certain percentage of the plastic pellets they produce, which go by ship to China to be made into disposable rubbish to be shipped back and sold to us, gets spilled in transit and ends up in the sea and on the beaches. I also learned that they're allowed to leak up to ten tonnes of benzine per year before they have to declare an incident with the environment agency.

With all this in mind, imagine how I felt when one of my kids came home from school, in a really good mood because the plastic industry is saving the environment. A representative from the chemical works had been in to give a presentation and talk. Plastic is great for the environment because it's lightweight so is cheap to transport and can be reused many times etc etc. No mention of bringing crude oil from the middle east, wasting about half of it through sludge and other waste products, using so much energy they need their own on site power station to supplement what they buy from the grid, sending plastic pellets by lorry to the port, ship to China, lorries to the factory, more energy used to make it into stuff, ship it back from China etc, and spill a percentage of it on the way.

I was fuming. Not at my son, and not even at the rep that came in, but at the school for allowing the kids to be brainwashed without any counter argument. I tried to set the record straight, and I think it worked because now both my kids are like the plastic police.
