Well the argument was pretty Daily Mail so I pointed it out. I am just responding here… your empathy appears to not extend to small people who maybe don’t appreciate some language? It’s possible after all that any of us - me too - are ignorant of certain realities here. Why not just go - oh - ok: I’ll be consider’that in future? After all - you might avoid offending short people and it costs nothing.

Cancel culture, - the word midget no longer exists, it is stricken from the dictionary and cannot be applied to anything, not even a fruit sweets?
    This is madness.

I quite understand that small people dont want to be referred to as midgets its been like that for ages, its nothing new.
But getting rid of the word completely is just stupidity and nothing to do with the Daily Mail, I dont read any newspapers.

Suggesting I read the Daily Mail, I find that an insult.

The word midget still exists. It’s historic connotations remain. You can ignore it if you like…and be outraged.
      Ok. Noted.

I’ve no idea if you read the Daily Mail. It just sounds like that if you dismiss the need to consider historic privileges like being able to use language which offends some groups, without batting an eyelid and dismissing the issue so glibly.

There is no suggestion of getting rid of the word midget. We might just use it more thoughtfully. And if certain groups say: please don’t use that word - why not just say - oh - sorry. Right oh

      ?

The crux of the matter was, returning to the original post.

The word should not be applied to fruit sweets.

I really cant see how using that M word, for a packet of fruit sweets, can be offensive to a person, how ever tall they are.

But I can understand them being offended if the M word is applied to them.

      What more can I say?

Are fruit sweets what we call jujubes? Gelatin based candies?

I've never tried these but I think they are similar to what we call wine gums, but smaller.
Yeah a kind of chewy fruit that sticks to your teeth.

It's okay, I've already moved on having duly run a line through the M word in my dictionary (in pencil) :)

I'll be back to moan in the morning if my jean freezing doesn't work:heehee:

Nice thread. No grind factor today, other than, seagulls. Sea, stay there and do in the sea what bears do in the woods.

i don’t understand it either but then I’ve not tried and I’m happy to accept that every tine I have investigated such a situation I have quickly been educated in a load of stuff I was previously ignorant about. And it costs me nothing to just go - oh right, fine - while I am ignorant.

I think this is totally absurd, as are all the other changes of late. Aunt Jemima Syrup, Uncle Ben's Rice. I guess this is referring to midget gems which we love. We also love wine gums. What will they call them ... small gems? :rolleyespink: Fruit sweets to me are boiled sweets (I know that is old fashioned). I always have some of those around for when you just have to have something sweet.

@CanadianLori Yes, midget gems would be like jujubes but slightly softer, wine gums are chewier, and fruit gums stick to your teeth.

What are those little flower tasting hard gums (not violet sweets). Just remembered, Floral Gums.

After reading some of the recent posts I thought I should recommend the new movie of "Cyrano" with Peter Dinklage playing Cyrano. Takes a different angle to the traditional versions; having seen the trailer and read some good reviews I am planning on seeing this as soon as it hits a local cinema.
