Whilst I agree that it was the Tories that sold off the energy markets, they are not alone by a very, very long chalk in all of this mess. Blair/Brown/Milliband didn't do anything to re-nationalise it, or indeed water, yet DID go on to tie us into PFI that is quietly knackering the NHS. Milliband is the one that we need to thank for the green levies that make up circa 25% of our energy bills now. When our bills were less than £1000 on average, that was around £20-25 per month. Now they are getting on for almost four grand, that is getting on for £100 per month! Whilst Tories also did allow discharge of covid patients to nursing homes.. so did the SNP, and in much higher numbers. Labour MP Rosie Duffield thought so much of the rules, she went off and had her leg over a man other than her hubby, Margaret Ferrier (SNP) travelled the length of the country by train, KNOWING she was covid positive... I could go on, but suffice to say they are all a shower of sh**e and have been for many, many years.

If the power companies were nationalised would energy be any cheaper?
I very much doubt it, they would still be buying on the world market and our prices would still be the same.
The problem lies with the multinational companies that need bringing to heel globally.

How you do that is a mystery to me as they set their own rules and prices.

          I'm not a cricket fan.
Having said that I've noticed on the TV news they tell you what has been going on during the day.

But they never seem to finish off with the latest score.

My own view only... If they hadn't been sold off in the first place, then yes I think energy would be cheaper as we would be generating more of our own and not be reliant on buying energy in on the global markets. There are two threads to it for me - the deregulation being only one side of the story, the other is the headlong push for renewables which has not managed to come anywhere near the amount of generation required. The margin between what is being used and what is able to be generated has been reduced by a scary amount and now it is catching up with us. We should have been building power stations (nuclear and hydro in conjunction with water storage and dealing with floodwaters) and that should have started at least 20 years ago.

But why does what we do generate cost the same as gas.
Its price fixing by all concerned, we are being ripped off and lied to all the time.

These companies are so huge they probably have more influence, power over governments anyways.

Of the top 100 economic entities, two thirds are corporations. If Walmart was a country, it would be ranked 24th by its GDP.

                My thoughts....

The green levy would be fair enough, if it was being spent on actual renewable energy projects. Perhaps it is, I don't know, considering renewable energy projects are mostly paid for by the energy companies that commission them, I strongly doubt that the green levy is being used for that purpose, other possibly as a bribe to said energy companies to build them on our territory, in which case we as consumers are effectively paying twice.

I agree entirely that all political parties are bad, and guilty of many things. I think the SNP can almost be forgiven. They are simply idiots. They can't help being stupid. The Tory bunch on the other hand are well educated and know exactly what they're doing.

I can almost accept the lies, after all, have any of us ever known any different from politicians? What I can't accept is the excuses. Let's look at some examples, and consider what they really mean:

Energy prices are high because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine = decades of complacency, arrogance and neglect has left us entirely at the mercy of people we've never trusted.

There's a skills shortage= decades of complacency and a lack of will to maintain a fit for purpose education system means we have to import skills from elsewhere, except we've forbidden them from coming in.

Covid was an unprecedented event = we ignored the Asian flu pandemic in the 1950s, and Spanish flu at the beginning of the last century, and every other pandemic of which there's been many throughout history, not to mention the thankfully less virulent ones like SARS, MERS, swine flu, ebola, that are all fairly recent, and we ignored the advice of experts that warned the biggest threat to the UK is a viral pandemic and we should gear up for one and make a plan and run drills so we're as ready as we can be.

The government has no control over private companies and how they set their prices= we sold everything that the tax payer had invested in and the monopolies and mergers act has no teeth.

That is something that is allegedly being looked at - currently, all energy regardless of the generation method is priced according to the cost of the generation method that is the most costly. Ultimately, it boils down to the simple fact that when the wind isn't blowing and the sun isn't shining, gas is the next 'go to' - - worse still, we are interconnected with Europe so our energy is traded on the global market, so whoever pays the highest price gets the energy.

All European countries simply got too comfortable with Russia supplying the gas and didn't stop to think of the risks involved - hell, the Germans even laughed at Trump when he told them at a conference that they were heading for trouble by hooking themselves to Russian gas only... not laughing much now!

Cheaper tariffs would attract global hungry energy companies to relocate though. The cheaper energy costs are, then demand intensifies as companies look to maximise profits . When you look at the likes of Iceland and Norway, there geothermal and hydropower energy has allowed then to have cheap tariffs, yet consumption per capita is far greater than any other country in Europe.

But is that a problem, seeing as it's largely clean energy?

Seeing as this a a moan thread, here's my energy related moan. A quick scan of social media, even LinkedIn which is supposed to be a professional site rather than the usual Facebook style drivel, reveals there's still a huge number of naysayers and deniers. Someone builds a working prototype of a new renewable energy generator, all the comments are about how it will never work, or how, even though it's funded by private investors, it's a waste of taxpayers money, it's greenwashing, gas lighting, or any number of other trendy terms for scam.

What concerns me is the bit about if a customer gets in debt the energy companies will arrange an affordable scheme to pay the money back. If a single mum uses £100/week of electricity but can only afford £30 the energy companies will say to pay £30. But she still needs £100 worth. Are the energy companies going to give her £100 for her £30? I don't think so. Are they going to cut her off until the debt is cleared? Not allowed.
My plan is just to use my overdraft and credit cards if I need to and the bank can dance on my grave when I go.

That depends, when you look at the bigger picture, the energy might be cleaner, but what is the co2 per capita, imports, exports. Iceland is the one of the most over tourism countries in the world. There has been 2 new smelting factories built in Iceland where bauxite is shipped from around the globe to produce aluminium billets, how clean is that.

As I understand it the energy companies have been allowed to hike up the daily standing chargs, the idea being they use that to fund the debts incurred by the less well off. In theory those of us able to pay our bills including the standing charges are supporting that single mum. What happens at an individual level I don't know, I guess the single mum will eventually be chased to pay back the £70 difference which would be a travesty.
