The UN is a waste of time anyway. All they seem to do is get together and vote on whether someone has been naughty or not. Even if they unanimously vote yes, they just produce a document, and that's about it. If it's a weak country that's been naughty, they might tell the Americans that they won't care if they do whatever they were going to do anyway. If it's a stronger country that's been naughty, nothing happens because the stronger country is in the UN and has the power of veto.

 

I see the UN as a similar organisation to the EU, in some respects.
You just turn up there, talk for hours agree something then all go home and forget what you agreed until the next time.

None of these talking shops work, but they do cost a lot of money to run and keep hundreds of thousands of people in high paid jobs.

 

It looks like most forms of sport are going to be a thing of the past unless all players wear crash helmets, but then they could cause damage to other parts of the body.
Can you tell me these people had no idea that they were messing up their bodies by heading footballs or crashing into one another.

The blame culture is getting out of hand.

 

One of my leisure activities is martial arts practice.

When I first started, in the 1980s, sparring practice was basically a slightly toned down version of a fight. Training with no mats on the floor, and no protective gear, we'd wallop each other about. It was only limited force and we weren't allowed to go for the goolies or throat, but pretty much everything else was allowed.

Fast forward to today. In many clubs there are so many rules it just doesn't look like sparring. And if striking is involved, you have to wear padded boots, gloves, and a head guard as a minimum.

So what does this mean for safety? I have no statistics. This is just my observation. I've seen people suffer training injuries more frequently in recent times than used to happen. Why is this? Safety gear creates a false sense of security. If you're not wearing padded boots, you don't fire your bare toes at somebody's shin or knee unless you know you've got your timing bang on. Head gear is the worst thing. It's a personal bugbear of mine. I think I'm quite sensible but not everyone is. For some people, wearing a head guard makes them think they don't need to guard their head. So more head shots inbound. Others see a head guard as a fair target, so whereas you some might fire a fast but very limited power punch at an unprotected head, just enough to let their training buddy they need to pay more attention to protecting their head, others really go for it, thinking the head guard will absorb any amount of force.

The thing with head protection that too many people overlook is it's not superficial bruising and grazes that cause a problem. That's all the headgear protects you against. The real damage happens when the brain is violently rattled inside the skull. Head gear offers to protection whatsoever from that.

 

The thing is will they also claim in the future for arthritis due to old bone breaks and any amount of other ailments you get as you get older.
Maybe there is an increased risk of brain problems, I dont really doubt it, but its the chance you take, if your not prepared to take that chance get a different job.

 

I have always found this thread very negative and quite boring actually, and that's why I seldome look at it. There should be a thread called 'Things that have made you happy today' but since most people seem to be negative I doubt whether anyone would write in it.
Is that a moan ? I don't usually moan ...
