The thing is that if the pipes were in good condition it wouldn't happen.

It's because years ago they weren't as old. Just like me. Years ago I wasn't as old, and now I'm older, just like the older infrastructure, I seem to bust more often than I used to.

Yeah, maybe they should maintain things better, nearly every closed road around here is either the gas or the water just burrowing around for days on end and then as soon as we get a few warm days it all falls apart.
I'm sure other countries that have much more varied climates than we do dont have these problems every year.

Not too far from there United Utilities (the water authority) shall be closing the use of three of its reservoirs as they have built new water supply facilities elsewhere. At Crummock Water they shall be removing the weir and other facilities which will drop the level of the lake by up to 5ft. This, combined with the closure of the other two facilities, they say will help restore some of the waterways (rivers?) to their old routes and improve the habitat for fish. They haven't said anything about what it will do to the wildlife habitat as it exists now.

Whilst they are doing the work, which could take up to two years, they shall be closing the only car park and path through the woods that is available for people with mobility problems. This car park and path is the only access to the beach that is used by swimmers and people who love the peace and quiet of that isolated spot.

The roads in that area already have considerable problems as they are extremely narrow and winding. They haven't yet shown how they would mitigate the road confusion that would ensue.

I can't quite understand why they would want to do away with three reservoirs when it is projected that the UK will be getting more and more problems with water storage and supply as the climate changes!

Haven't heard the railways complaining about buckled tracks yet this year.

Maybe because half the time they are on strike.

So many " new builds " housing sites everywhere but no new reservoirs to accommodate the new dwellers.
SE Water are lecturing us daily about only using water for essentials and showing us graphs of significant usage in the last couple of weeks.
I am watering shrubs and border plants that I don't want to see wither and die...

The land developers promise many things in their applications, which never happen when the builds are complete.
Councils should reject many of these applications, the problem is they usually get approved on appeal.
The only winners are the County & local Councils with more Council Tax.

Which they immediately spend fixing the problems inherent in the planning they approved.
There's one in the news today - they built a new village development with school for 500 or so students. Unfortunately they refused to listen to concerns and are 1500 places short

Not really a moan more of a public service announcement:biggrin:
After Morrisons hiked up all it fuel prices I now see they are selling diesel and petrol at 140.9.

Does anyone know what they are trying to do, achieve, apart from p*ssing everyone off.

I own a plot of land. I wanted to build an eco friendly house on it but I have zero chance of getting planning permission, for two reasons. The official reason is due to its location. It's in a national park, but only just, and on the other side of a busy road that runs down the edge of the national park boundary. The real reason, a wealthy businessman told me, is because I'm not rich. When I asked him how he got planning permission for a build in a sensitive area that was not in keeping at all with the local area, he asked me simply, how much money do I have. I told him not much. He went on to explain that the trick is to invite the chief planning officer out for a round of golf, and offer to make a substantial cash donation to a charity of his choice. Or put another way, bribe the planning officer to encourage an approval.

You can see it happen on the websites of planning authorities that publish planning applications and decisions. Sometimes you'll see two almost identical applications at neighbouring properties, and one gets approved and the other gets declined.

Hosepipe ban for Kent as South East Water says demand reaches 'record levels'

The ban will come into force on Monday, June 26, meaning customers can not use hosepipes for tasks such as watering gardens, washing cars and filling swimming and paddling pools.

What's the betting that on June 27th the heavens open and we get floods.

I don't think that this has much to do with water quantity they just can't treat it fast enough, again lack of investment.
