Latest Moan From You and Me 2023

I got an email from my energy provider. Seeing as I didn't take them up on their 12 month fix that had the exact same unit price as the capped price I pay now, they clearly are trying another way to fleece me. They're increasing my direct debit, to make sure my account stays in good shape over winter apparently.

Great. Except by the end of winter I'm usually several hundred pounds in credit, then in spring I claim back the credit balance.

I might ask them to pay me interest on the loan I effectively gave them for all the months I was in credit over last winter.

I received an email from you telling me that you're increasing my direct debit. Seeing as I am usually in credit, and remained in credit throughout the whole of last winter, I'm a bit surprised by how much you want to increase it by. I'm happy to give Eon another loan over this winter, but with the bank of England base rate being so much higher now, I would expect interest on any credit balance. Alternatively we leave my direct debit as it is and I top up if and when required.

 

Probably not what everyone wants but I just send in my reading each month and they take the amount by direct debit.
I dont like paying up front for anything but must admit I do with the water company, but they cant seem to grasp the fact I use a lot more water in summer than I do in winter, so they change my DD amount twice a year.

 

Yes but it's annoying because if I take no action, they will increase it. I wonder how many thousands of people will either just accept it, or not even see the message in the first place.

 

The subject moved on in this thread, but I'd just like to say I think Hugh Edwards wife did the right thing in going public and making a statement, its shut the whole thing down, ....for the time being.
He is someone who I think a lot of people liked and are probably feeling sorry for what has occurred and the situation he is in.

 

The problem with recycling is that more and more they want us to sort it all out, we could end up with 20 different bins in another few years.

 

The trouble with recycling is it ends up in the sea, via some third world country that we've paid to make it their problem instead of ours.

 

I think that was once the case, but not sure now.

 

I hope you're right. But there are plenty of recent documentaries from credible sources including DW News and the BBC on YouTube about it.

I do know that a growing number of countries have introduced, or are in the process of introducing, new laws banning the import of foreign recycling materials.

It's not that I'm opposed to recycling. I just think there's a tendency to dump things in the bin and not question what happens next. Going back a good few years, I don't know if it still happens, but one of the Scandinavian countries was actually buying rubbish from other countries to fuel their incinerators that doubled as power stations. I think that's a better idea, but people hear the word incinerator and get upset about the co2, while often the same people give no thought to the co2 in the whole recycling process. No fault of anyone's, we've been told for decades that recycling is good, burning things is bad.
