Just paid £180 for road tax. I do max 3k per year and can only travel just above walking pace. What a bargain...

I thought the same and just googled it. It seems there isn't increased emissions at 20 :dunno: (although I'm still not totally convinced)

So if you travel at higher revs and burn more fuel you don't increase emissions?
As I said before I was never good a science:biggrin:

I know the revs will be different from car to car depending on lots of things but speaking personally, my car doesn't like travelling in 3rd gear at 20, its a kind of an up down thing all the time, I can just about get away with 4th gear at around 30, but again its not a comfortable speed regarding gear selection.

Or maybe that is for EVs.:roflol:

This thing about pollution. We had a 70 mph stretch of road reduced to 50 mph and were told that this reduction is speed reduced pollution. Do they mean that engines were not working as hard - less revs due to lower speed - so less burning of fuel. Which is fine - but it's gearing that makes a huge difference in revs and the pollution levels - not just speed.

Or has Mark thought - hmmm - lower speeds means less pollution - we've cracked it lads.

I don't think Mark is bothered - he's not standing at the next election - so will be able to sit back and watch his party get a good pasting in 2026.

I don't think driving at 20/30mph or above makes any difference to pollution. If we're driving slower it takes us longer to get to our destination, so surely it works out the same?

I think its more to do with efficiency, surely every engine has a point where it is most efficient, taking that to the limit it would probably be in the highest gear and the least fuel consumption per mile.
If you were to travel everywhere in second gear you will burn more fuel, more fuel surely means more pollution.
But that really is beside the point, its just annoying trying to drive that slow.

I know when driving Buses that a lower gear meant the engine puffed out more smoke.

With driving lorry's & tractors, over reving and make the engine stuggle use's more fuel finding right gear & rev's make it sweet

Some time with the car i give it a bast to clean the engine, high rev's + low gear and then watch the mpg gauge and if it's right some times on a flat road with high rev's + low gear the mpg gauge can say your doing 50+ to the gallon

If higher gears were not more efficient they wouldn't give them to us.

I did a bit of trying to drive at 20mph today, it aint easy but when
I came along the motorway and they had roadworks and average speed cameras set at 50mph.

50 felt really slow and I was being tailgated and overtaken by every foreign vehicle on the road.

I get fed up with receiving 'How did we do?' emails and rarely fill in their surveys. Even some restaurants send them out if we made our booking online. A lot of businesses do this because they have a third party survey company do it for them automatically. I delete nearly all of and only respond if I was not happy or exceptionally pleased. In either of those two situations, if I don't receive a survey, I email them (don't do social media).

I received a 'How did we do?' survey yesterday from British Gas (through KPMG - bet they charge quite a bit for their service) so gave the lowest score on every question and told them what I think of them.

The day before, they had sent me a notice saying that they have increased my monthly Direct Debit (DD) as we are using more power (gas and electricity) than the DD covers and increased it to a very odd number and ending in 38p. They also said that if I wished to change it I could do so on their website. So I promptly went on there to change it to a round figure and got a report say 'Sorry, you can only increase it'. :wallbanging:

In the past I have always paid my bills the exact amount each month using their automated system. Then early this year they told me that if I don't pay by DD they will charge me extra. So I said that was OK as long as they took the right money and they replied that they can only do a fixed DD and not a variable one. I kicked up a fuss about that and they said they were looking into changing the system so that it could be done. They haven't done it! So I told KPMG all that, on the survey, and gave them permission to forward it to BG. I'm hoping, but not expecting, that they might be influenced somewhat by all the lowest ratings on my survey.

                    Signed,
President, Grumpy Old Men's Club :old:

I pay BG by variable direct debit.
So it can be done, but I don't think the people at the call centre know how to do anything.
I complained about the timing on my economy 7 meter.
After lots of explaining what it actually was and did I was told by the idiot to take a photo of it and send it to an email address.
Did it and never got a reply.

I also pay my gas and electricity by variable DD and have done so for several years now.

I just delete surveys and 'How did we do' emails. They usually send another one but I delete that too. They give up in the end.

I used to do that as well but when I signed a new contract they stopped it and said they don't do it for new contracts. I signed the contract as it was a 24 month fixed term on the prices before they put the prices right up.
