Yeah, you cant put all people in one pigeon hole, and I often see tractors pulling over on main roads, it just the ones that think they own the lanes that get me, just because their farm is on a specific lane, and to be honest they are the ones that tend to be speeding on those lanes.
    Familiarity breeds contempt.

@BB3, am absolutely with you on parking apps. There needs to be one covering all places ... and the individual companies can have some system to arrange payments from it.

I once came face to face with a driver like that on a skinny single track lane.

He was in his beefed up 4x4 with knobbly tyres. I was in my rear wheel drive Volvo road car. We met face to face and both stopped. He clearly expected me to get out of the way. I just switched the engine off, and made a great show of relaxing and getting myself comfy for a long wait. My reasoning was, if you choose a vehicle that is clearly built for driving through sloppy mud without getting stuck, then of course it's your choice whether you did it for fashion or function, but you make your choice, others will look at what you chose and make their own decisions. My decision was that I'm not taking my road car into sloppy mud where it will likely get stuck, just to make life a little more convenient for someone who is in a massive vehicle that is clearly designed and built for use in mud. So I waited. Eventually he gave in and pulled off the side into the sloppy mud. I then continued on my way, I gave him a little wave by way of thanks, because I'm not a monster.

I don’t go up the bank nor onto a soft verge … I reverse to a passing place or gateway. As I said earlier driving onto soft verges causes a huge amount of damage to ditches. drains and culverts which is then often responsible for flooding on roads.
If you can’t reverse the vehicle you’re driving you shouldn’t be driving it on a single track road.

If I'm out and just on a jolly, I will always pull in for someone who looks like they're working. Also, it suits me for them to be the ones who have to look out for sheep or whatever round the next bend.

It's not always about whether you can or can't reverse. Sometimes it's about whether you should.

If two vehicles meet face to face, one has to yield. There is no clearly defined rule as to who that should be. It's is largely a matter of common courtesy. If one vehicle would have to reverse half a mile through blind bends, and the other would have to reverse ten feet to a layby or similar, it should be obvious who should yield. It should be obvious, but sadly it seems, to some it is not.

We have three single track bridges over the Medway, and usually one direction is given right of way, but its not always easy to see if its clear before going over them.

Causes all kinds of road rage, I even stopped one night on my way home from work to let on coming traffic clear the bridge, and someone hooted me and overtook me, they then had to reverse back which was a good laugh.

That's so funny. I love things like that.

Two days in a row last week, two completely different vehicles, made a great show of overtaking me as aggressively as they could, obviously to express their disapproval of the fact I was sticking to the speed limit, what with us passing through a village where kids might step into the road or anything. Then having aggressively overtaken, they then end up at the back of the traffic in front of me, such that I'm the next car behind them for ages. I just know they'll secretly feel like a pleb.

I think we need to be careful what we wish for. They are starting to name these apps, especially on council run carparks Ulep, ultra low emission parking. By using the app, it will be programmed to charge those in combustion engine cars and heavier cars more for parking. DVLA released services that allows app developers to charge parking on the emissions of the vehicle.

Drivers now have to pay more to park depending on their fuel type - Nottinghamshire Live (nottinghampost.com)

Now it's ULEP - that's ultra low emission PARKING! How councils are quietly introducing apps to charge drivers of older vehicles MORE to park | This is Money

France voted to increase parking charges for non residents by up to 300% which is based on the emission's and weight of the vehicle plus the district your parking in, the longer the stay, the more you pay. So, to park a large SUV for 1 hour has increased from €6 per hour to €18, then to park for 6 hours it would cost €225

Paris SUV referendum brings huge parking prices across the city | The Independent

Now they have access to DVLA database, where will it end. Toll roads will just need a camera to pickup your car registrations, then they can charge you more, for using toll roads, bridges etc etc. This will not just target vehicles with a combustion engine but larger heavier electric cars will also be seen as another source of revenue.

I don't have a problem with paying more for fuel if I buy a vehicle that has a high consumption rate. I don't mind paying more for parking if my vehicle is large. Those are consumer choices made at the point of purchase and based on ecology/economy/available funds.

Paris is exceptional in many ways but round here we have parking meters into which we enter the registration number and then pay according to how long we want to stay. In all but heavy tourist spots in season, the first hour is often free as is the lunch period from noon till 2pm. In undergound car parks, you get your ticket on entry and pay before leaving and still get an hour free.

Ah, what I meant, @gks, was for all the current apps to be amalgamated so those who park in app-only carparks only need one on their phone. I didn't mean everywhere should be app parking. Indeed, as a smartphone-free person, this would be a right bummer for me!

I quite like app parking but agree, there are too many, one app should be accepted by all carparks, there isn't room for each company or council to have their own quirky app.

I love that on any type of road @Clueless 1 v2 - the clowns with heavy right feet, who can't wait to get past you, then you meet them at the next set of lights - no further on than if they'd stayed where they were. They must be constantly filling their cars up at the pump....

You regularly meet the other 'type' being discussed on roads with passing places. They haven't a clue as to how you drive on those roads. The 'tourists' who don't seem to understand the word 'passing' isn't the same as 'parking' are a common occurrence too. Some areas up here are becoming really dangerous because of folk parking in them. They seem to forget that people aren't just visiting and taking selfies - they live and work in those areas - often in the very places they're staying in for their holiday.
                                Utterly thoughtless and selfish.
