But if you keep thinking and taking an interest you’re still learning , even if the dratted body stuff means you can’t actually DO the stuff you learn. :grphg:

At 76, I do mental puzzles daily, crochet a couple of hours a day, read//study daily, do photography, static cycle three times a week, garden in a wheelchair ... it is not enough for me ...

People should be able to ask and people should advise, and do it gently and not assume everybody knows how!

How frustrating for you, @Victoria, but it sounds like you’re keeping going despite it all. Getting more done than I am, despite being a fraction younger and a lot fitter than you are. Makes me feel a bit ashamed.

I certainly agree with your last sentence that you should not stop trying new things.

It's just that I don't see the need, for myself, to have any of the portable electronic devices and do not wish to have the use of 'social media'.

My desktop computer gives me all the access I wish in the form of electronic communication and receive between 50 and 100 emails a day :phew:, have two landlines (used to be three ), run three social clubs, involved in four charities, look after some disabled people, help run our village hall, am president of and have been on the executive of the chamber of commerce for 60 years, and before covid used to travel the world to out of the way places and write travel guides.

In my spare time I manage to get a little bit of gardening done :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Indeed it is, as my wife keeps telling me, when I say I don't do social media. Then of course there is my Instagram account, but that is only pictures, so it doesn't count.

I find having a smartphone very useful for my gardening activities. I keep a spreadsheet of what I've grown and what I need, so I can quickly consult that in a garden centre to avoid buying something I have previously failed with. Can quickly google a plant to check if that beautiful azalea would grow in my chalky soil etc

I went on FB, reluctantly, as it allowed an easy and efficient way to share videos of dance figures in private groups I managed in our dance club. I've stayed on it after finding local groups that share info on events and now Possum uses it to PM me as I don't always have my mobile turned on.

I do not post about my daily activities and have very few "friends" as I'm in touch with the people I care about via email or phone and sometimes letter.

This forum, and GW before it, are where I go for chat about gardening and gardeners and their lives and interests and is a much more constructive and enjoyable social resource for me than FB.

I'm quite shocked! I was about to place an order with Beth Chatto. Not only is there a minimum order value but they want almost £11 delivery. Changed my mind ...:yikes:

I don't really see why people are so adamant that they don't want a smartphone or want a FB account or any other technology.
I do have a smart TV but I only use the bits of that I want, most of it doesn't get used, likewise my laptop and my phone.
Until I got a smartphone I seriously asked myself do I need one.
I'm glad I decided to get one and find it very useful.

Maybe there were folk who thought that the newfangled invention called wheels was just a fad and they preferred to continue to use sleds.

While there are circumstances where sleds are more effective than wheels, I’m sure our lives would nowadays be the poorer had wheels never ‘caught on’
