The farmer we lived near at the last house was a vile man. Cut off the water supply to the woman across from him because they had a disagreement about something or other.
That meant our supply was also cut off - it was supplied from a well further up, but crossed his land. He came to apologise, and I always said to my then partner - 'when you see him going by just wave and smile while calling him every name under the sun' . That's the sort of person he was, and you wouldn't want to cross him.

 

Surely, one of the things we should be learning from the war in Ukraine, is, that if we do not produce enough of our own food, we can be held to ransom by the likes of Putin.
We must support our farmers.

 

I’m sure there are some vile farmers. just as there are some vile truck drivers. vile bankers and vile politicians… I’ve even met a vile gardener … thankfully vile folk are in the minority in most spheres of life

 

Quite a few vile doctors as well. I think I worked with most of them.

 

I’ve met one … a hospital Registrar in an endocrinology dept … he made me cry … I made an official written complaint, received an apology from the hospital and was assured he was going to receive some more training.

He had actually said ‘the trouble with people like you is …’

 

How heartening to read your posts, @Dovefromabove! We live surrounded by the fields belonging to the farmers who sold us our house and land. We've stayed on friendly terms with them for 19 years now and they've helped us whenever we needed a coup de main, just as we've tried to keep the boundaries tidy and supplied them with asparagus I often read of Brit stand-offs with their local hunt, too. Usually caused by a total ignorance of what it means here, how it is regulated and that it is advisable for incomers to take a non-aggressive stance unless they want their lives to be made a complete misery!

So very often, when I stick up for farmers by explaining why they to what they do, I’m met with incredulity by folk who’ve moved to a rural area from elsewhere and have only a hazy understanding of farming practices, and just don’t get why things have to be done a certain way.

 

Most farms around here are being sold for housing, you cant have both unless you just plough up the national parks, come to think of it, we don't have many around here to plough.

 

The Tories are saying: We will .......
I'm saying: Why didn't you.....?

 

They all tell us what they think we want to hear, but none give us a real idea of how they will achieve it.

 

BB3 is correct in saying they had 14..... years!

 

And Labour will also say "We will.......
I'll be asking "How will you fund it?"

I wouldn't trust any political party to do what it claims during the lead up to an election.
