I was using the internet back in 1985, maybe a bit earlier, as our software house in Harrow communicated that way with our parent company in the USA to collaborate on Unix projects. There was no competition for data space and, given the time difference, it all came and went overnight. No instant stuff.

No Google or Microsoft empires then either and PCs were only just starting to arrive. For us it was DELL or IBM with what would now be a tower sat on its side on the desk with a floppy disk reader and a very heavy screen on top and a keyboard in front. No mouse.

A few of our staff helped build Windows in Seattle but when I left computing in 1989 there was no sign yet of what would become Word, Excel or Outlook...........

      Ah yes. I remember ... when .....

... in 1963 when I first encountered an electric typewriter ... :yikes: At that time I did a test at 128wpm on a manual ... and I took shorthand! :old: Computers ...

      Loved every moment.

Apologies for banging on about our delinquent magpies, but they are driving me bonkers...

I join bamboos together (for supporting netting) using sponge tennis balls (suitable for kids, and for indoor play) instead of the pre-drilled "horti balls" which I bought a number of years ago. The holes in the "horti balls" are almost always either too big or too small for the bamboos I have, whereas a little slit in the sponge ball enables me to push in a bamboo of any diameter, which is then held fast. I made a protective net cage for my strawberry bed last week. This afternoon, when I went to pick the strawberries, I noticed a lot of bits of something blue on the bark path surrounding the strawberry bed... and I know who done it. :wallbanging:

We've still got a Phillips CRT 14ins monitor in our loft. It has a curved screen - it curves outwards i.e it bulges outwards. It still works. If it works hubby never throws anything away...... The other day he retrieved a Brother inkjet printer from the loft that had been in there for 17 years. We thought it had gone wrong, but when started up the display said "print job complete".

Just noticed my laptop doesn't have a plug hole, (technical term), for an ethernet cable, is that normal?
                  My old one did.

@ViewAhead they haven't touched the nasturtiums, so next year that's all I'm going to grow as I've had enough of them.

Cost cutting I guess, saves having an ethernet circuit in your laptop. Just about everything connects with USB nowadays.
