I don't know what Martin Lewis says about a way round it but there is a way that has worked for us. If you don't use it often, at about six months into having not used it (other periods are available :heehee:) withdraw most of the balance and then pay it back in. That counts as a new deposit (or did when we did it last year) and starts your twelve month period again.

National Highways Agency are thieving whatsits!

I've got a bit of a theory about that as well.
Around here they resurface and with a couple of months the surface is coming away from the old road foundation, so not always potholes just a very rough surface, with the old road showing through underneath.

Is the stuff they use these days sub standard, or just some non toxic environmentally friendly, but useless material.

Road repairs seem to have gone the way of most things these days, all friendly but not up to the intended use.

To go North from here its a case of using the Dartford crossing or going into London and use Blackwall tunnel.
Even with the charges I'd use Dartford.

Bearing in mind that this little devious ***hole has this planned as well. King Khan.
Sadiq Khan hints that drivers could be charged £5.25 to use Blackwall Tunnel and... - LBC.

I think it's capped in England to 4.99% most of that to the County Council. Our local Police Authority is pushing for much more. They have all been getting above inflation rises for the last 20 odd years but still keep cutting services, Libraries, toilets and pools closing, and money wasted on substandard filling potholes that need doing each year.

My memory is too bad to remember to do that. I read it's possible to set up a direct debit so you pay as you go. I can't find a way of changing my account so it must be duff information.

If possible we go the other way round the M25 to avoid the toll but sometimes the traffic that way is at a standstill.

I think if an English council has declared its bankrupt they can rise it by more than the cap, but cant they also raise it by more if they have a referendum.
              Just things I have heard.

Re road repairs, especially potholes:- a friend of mine used to be in charge of building roads and has said they don't do the job properly. I can't remember the technical details but they are supposed to cut out around the edges of the hole, surface the edges with some sort of filler (probably a sticky type of tarmac) fill the hole making sure the new tarmac is tamped down properly and then run a seal around the edges. I sometimes see the seal around the edges as a smooth and shiny strip of tarmac.

To do it properly they want to close the road for a week, it takes two days to write out the method statements and risk assessments.
So they throw a bucket of tarmac in the puddle and let the traffic flatten it.:dunno:
