An enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I’m listening to this programme on Radio Four just now. I never really was one for history - always written by the winners - but this gives a very good insight into our relationship with Russia, America, and Stalin during WWII.

The Stalin Affair by Giles Milton - Episode 1 - BBC Sounds

It's part of the plan, once allowed to stay the rest can then state they have family here.

So would you put the war in Ukraine, Falklands, Bosnia, Korea, WW2 all in this category, or just meddling in the middle east.
Some people always get rich out of wars, the biggest get rich schemes are crisis after crisis now, the pandemic made a lot of people rich likewise energy crisis and I'm sure there are those getting very rich over climate change, that one is going to run and run.

I agree. Taking advantage of chaos is the key. That chaos can be caused intentionally (say by invading a country) or accidentally (say Covid). Once an accidental event proves to be very lucrative, its next occurrence may be deliberate, of course. Gain of function research on viruses could arguably benefit humankind (I think the threats outweigh any possible benefits, but that's a different discussion), but it also creates massive potential for enormous wealth-grabs.

If it were possible to take all 3rd party profit out of war and health care (which, unfortunately it is not), our world would be a very different place.

Undoubtedly some people made enormous profits from COVID, but the vaccine technology has already led to several new vaccines for treating cancer, which in most people’s minds is a good thing.

Just reminds me of the Spiv and the black market in WW2, yes the small fry, but there is, and always will be, those that make money out of someone else's tragedy.

We don't live in a perfect world by a long way.

I am just horrified Sunak has suggested young people refusing national service might have access to bank accounts and driving licences withdrawn. That is such a slippery slope. The idea that if you don't do what a gov wants you do, you have essential things like finance withdrawn is appalling. That is not law by consent. And to see it as a possibility for something as utterly trivial as complying with an idea dreamed up for a manifesto promise to try to appeal to a tiny section of the voting public is truly shocking.

You have to wonder which branch of military or community service Rishi's children will do?

It's a ludicrous idea. "Civisme" is part of the national curriculum here so people grow up with a sense of social responsibility tho, as everywhere, the rich often feel entitled to ignore it and older people complain about today's youth in general.
