Why do diesel cars still pay less road tax??

 

We have enough driveway parking for one average car. Anyone else has to park on the road. No yellow lines, no permits required. But anyone who parks either side of our driveway entrance, or across the road from it, makes it very difficult to get out of the driveway.
I refuse to increase our own parking. I very much want to keep the trees, bushes, flowers, etc.

 

Some cars are a ridiculous size, parking spaces even in fairly new car parks don’t allow enough space for them. There is one near me where you more or less have to decide whether passengers or driver can open their door. I recently had to enter the passenger side and climb across to the drivers side, I had very tight jeans on (too much cake!) and I can only hope the CCTV footage from the nearby shop is never released.

 

I don't see why residents should have to pay for a permit to park their main car in their street/road/avenue. I don't think a fee for a second car should be high, especially in areas where public transport just doesn't match transport needs for getting to work, schools, services.

I thought there were rules now about using permeable surfaces when converting front gardens to off-road parking. Since you need to apply to the council to drop a crub to allow access it shouldn't be too complicated for them to ensure compliance with standards of material used.

 

In the streets where I used to live the front gardens weren’t big enough for a car and the streets are so narrow that if cars parked on both sides of the street an ambulance, fire engine or bin lorry couldn’t get through … there was therefore an informal arrangement whereby cars on the east side of the street parked with two wheels on the kerb and those on the west could park with all wheels on the road unless they were particularly large. This was accepted by the police etc.

It was acknowledged that this made the eastern pavement tricky for wheelchairs and wide buggies and many of them used the street instead, but no one could come up with an alternative. There was nowhere for a car park large enough for such a large residential area … and many of us had jobs that required us to use cars.

 

I've bought a £40 permit to park in the local park now I'm dog walking, it was free when I had my last dog.
They are very crafty, although its free up until 10am, so stated for dog walkers, there after it is £2 for 6 hours, not many want six hours.

They did the same or similar at a place I always used to go, Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest It was done as an honesty box years ago, now its not worth a visit just to walk the dog.
These places dont want local to use them anymore, just long stay really.

 

Where we used to live, one road to the local A&E always had cars parked both sides, and often overnight some residents would park down the middle too.

Early one morning, a fire engine needed to pass, as there was a fire at the hospital. Result for at least one resident was that their beloved car got pushed down the road. It can't have done it much good!!

 

Most in my road fit one car, though mine is a lucky exception.

And now with the likes of these parking apps having access to DVLA data base, it will not just be the CO2 emissions but the size and weight of the car will be taken into account. Fully electric cars will not be immune of higher parking fees, but using CO2 emissions has set the ball rolling.
