As opposed to kicking a plastic ball around a field. Plus 90 mins divided between 22 players = about 5 mins of ball contact, whereas in tennis ... And no footballer is asked to play a four hr match ending at 3 am and then play again 36 hrs later, or fly continously round the world straddling time and climate zones.

I rest my case.

 

I can remember before they had tie breaks, matches could go on for hours and hours until someone cracked.

 

Don't forget the noblest of the games: cricket and rugby, games for real men and women. Have you ever been hit on the head, by a very hard ball, traveling at 90mph, or been run into, at speed, by a 20 stone man with evil intent?? Those are real games.

My Dad played cricket back in the day and I remember him coming home from a match with a bandage round his head. Also had to have stitches on his ear from another contact with the ball. He was a bit of a man mountain, 20 stone, 6'2", my hero. Photo shows him with an ill-advised 'tache! Don't think he ever played rugby but he had the physique for it. Loved his footie too and was a Man U season ticket holder in the 60s

For me, there is to much money in football nowadays. In the past when you looked at the top ten best paid athletes, very rarely would there be a footballer.

Last year Cristiano Ronaldo earned $200 million, club contract and another $60 million in off field earnings, crazy amounts of money. Individual athletes can earn serious amounts of money, but they do need to win tournaments to do so, getting knocked out at early stages will reduce your potential earnings massively.

Heard on the radio that there was an election debate on French TV last night. It got 5 million viewers. The football got nearly 10 million. Haven't a clue who was playing on either channel.
