I admit to having a so-called smart phone. I also have a smart wife - but don't tell her I said so, because it'll mean I have to create a wider doorway, for that enlarged cranium!!

My modern car is full of those and buttons I need to press to shut off all the noises it makes. They drive me mad.

I don't have a mobile phone, my car has as many of the smart features switched off as possible apart from the satnav, which I admit to sometimes using, and the very annoying collision warning which can't be turned off.

We don't have a smart meter and our TV occasionally tells me that its smart features are turned off - with particular reference to its camera. Does it want to spy on me? :th scifD36:

Our computers keep telling us that we haven't signed into this or that which we totally ignore :heehee:

I am as smart-free as I can be. Phone, TV, meters, etc, all dumb. No sat nav. My only tech device is an ipad.

The real worry will be smart cities, where everything is tech controlled. A fault like yesterday would halt traffic lights, water treatment, the lot! And you only need water suspended for a very short time before unimaginable chaos sets in.

A lot of normal household appliances are going over to 'Smart' but not sure why they want to bother. Just more things to go wrong.

BT have now extended the swap over to digital to 2028. If you have registered with the Priority Services Register
The PSR - The Priority Services Register (PSR) is a free UK wide service which provides extra advice and support, including when there’s an interruption to your electricity or gas supply - PSR

Similarly with your phone provider, particularly if you are with BT, you will be able to get extra help with the swap over.

                https://www.ageuk.org.uk/bp-assets/...-voice-bts-new-home-phone-service---sep23.pdf

You just need to contact them and tell them you are retired and worried about the switch over and when the times comes can they come and fix everything for you and give you a back-up battery. You should get all this done free for you, particularly if you don't admit to having a mobile. I just play the old pensioner that doesn't understand these modern things, act. :old:  That way you should actually have it registered that you need them to come and do it for you. It just depends on how awkward doing it will be. We have a particularly awkward situation so do really need their help.

I switched all of those off too @Sheal . It's a sensory thing with me, but all these things are just more unnecessary stuff that can go wrong. They charge you thousands more for the privilege of having them too.
Daughter managed to get rid of the stupid flashing light on the door quarterlight too, which was to warn me that 'someone was overtaking'. Jeez. That's what mirrors are for - which is what I told the sales guy when I had a test drive. It was always going wrong too - flashing when you went round corners, or on empty glen roads with no vehicles within miles of me.

Smart appliances? I'll stick with the thick ones thanks....

Hopefully it will be a warning for individuals not to put all their reliance in technology. I've always thought that using a smartphone for every aspect of daily life was a recipe for disaster and this, on the grand scale, confirms that. With a phone, a battery fail, app fail, reader fail can bring their world crashing down. I read people bragging that they never use cash, I wonder how their supermarket shop went yesterday.

I agree, @Bluejayway , although if the only way you can get cash - because banks have closed most of their branches - is via the autoteller - you could be in trouble!

I don't know if it's called smart technology, but one of our cars tells us if a speed camera is ahead. That's really useful when it's just 20 or 30mph. When it beeps I have to remind hubby what it is.

BT have extended swap over to 2028? Is this the Digital Voice thingy? We've already had the first email warning about 5 months ago.

I really hate the "STAND CLEAR VEHICLE REVERSING" announcements disturbing the peace. :th scifD36: You sometimes even get "CAUTION VEHICLE TURNING LEFT"! FGS, what are indicators for? And why do I need to know about it from half a mile away? :wallbanging:
