That's one of the pitfalls @Tinkerton , we're lucky here as a "banking hub" has just opened. No bank for miles otherwise:wallbanging:

Planes seem to be flying again. I've just seen two.

Some years ago an older gentleman from across my road presumably had an extra fitted to his car,it involved this loud American sounding voice saying, "this car is backing up, this car is backing up ", one morning he reversed out his driveway straight into a parked car on the other side of the road.
Obviously he wasn't listening to the warning himself

They have already started swapping over but were supposed to have finished by the end of this year. That finish has been extended to the end of 2027. If they notify you that they are going to do yours and you have a good reason to delay then you ask them to postpone it.

Reasons can be you have some machinery that relies on the landline e.g. medical alarm or burglar alarm and they have not been converted to use the internet (still many of those around - including my burglar alarm), poor internet coverage, you're elderly and don't understand this internet thingy or don't want internet etc.

If it's someone who doesn't have internet and doesn't want it (a surprisingly high number of elderly) they have now brought out a phone that looks just like a large cordless phone that has all works inside it. They are guaranteed not to have internet charges but just have the same landline charges - if they're with BT. Some other suppliers also guarantee it but not many.

I was happily browsing the DVD sales yesterday in a store hit by Microsoft's manoeuvres. OH had to check carefully that I had not selected a Blue something version as it wouldn't play on our machine. At lunch with him and Possum I was roundly mocked for being an "old" lady and not understanding the difference between Blue-Ray and Blue tooth. The latter has always sounded like a disease to me so has not held my interest.

One of our cars can detect when someone in it has a mobile phone and that allows calls to be made or answered. Not for me when I'm driving. The same car has sensors that tells me when I'm about to bump into something. This includes weeds growing in the verge 3' away. Th reversing camera is useful tho as OH has not re-arranged its rear end once. The other car has had to have 2 new back ends........

I admit that I have speed camera warnings built into the car but as I'm a goody goody :pathd:  I don't need it.

One thing I do find useful on the car and not switched it off is the head up display that shows me the speed limit and my speed directly on the screen in front of me.

A banking security friend of mine says that you shouldn't have banking or credit card apps on your phone - although he's in the business. :noidea:

I get cash through the village post office and have never used a cash machine.

I don't think Microsoft are going to be too happy with being blamed for an outage caused by CrowdStrike software (s/w). It's a disgrace that such should happen in this day and age as NO proper testing could have been done for the s/w release. Someone was on today saying the "good" to come out of it all is gathering the details of the types of impact it has caused. It all just confirms for me that you always need a backup.

And this was an accidental outage. A malicious one would have even more ramifications.

There was a news report about this recently, with the advice being only have financial apps on a device that stays at home.

Personally, I am an app-avoider. I always use a website if one is available and I certainly will never use a banking app till absolutely forced to do so because there is no alternative.

I'm not keen on a world with no alternatives. I don't think such is in the best interests of society.

Our copper wires here are ageing and this new BT Voice piggy backs on the FTTC. They give you a new modem BT Smart Hub 2 I think, but a chap we spoke to said they were still sorting out what to do with customers who had broad band with someone other than BT. When BT email you they say they don't know if you have no BB at all or if you are with someone else. I have a feeling this will happen at the end of the year, when our BT Home Phone Saver expires. Their email said "don't worry"!

I have one BT line with BB and one without any BB. That's why they will have to come to sort it out. I've discussed it in person but nobody has yet come to look at my setup. They were a bit wary about the phone only line (and number) which we have had for nearly 60 years :heehee:

When we moved, BT told us that phone lines in our new area were digital, and therefore service was far superior.
                            Great!

However, in order to phone anyone within our area, we now have to add the local area code. Surely that is a backwards step!?

The thing is most people now have stored numbers so it's not such a problem.

I was never good at it but I can remember having about 10 phone numbers in my head..
I don't have any now apart from my own and that sometimes gets forgotten when under pressure.

Just found about 4 kilos of frozen black berries ans 3 kilos of figs in the bottom of the freezer, probably have to dump them now as I can't think anyone would want them.
