    What's a PPC?

Possibly would help if there was a bus service here. :noidea:

Riots almost always happen in hot weather, and the hottest countries tend to have the most unrest, except in very authoritarian regimes where chanting and lobbing an object would mean instant death by the state. It's something to do with heat relaxing the fear centres in the brain. It's why you feel chilled on a beach holiday, for example ... unless you have a phobia about sand between your toes, of course.

Re govs, I just don't understand why they all seem to believe getting into power is a mandate to impose anything they want. :nonofinger: That's why I would like election manifestos to be a list of ten items they plan to do. If they want to add anything else once in office, there would have to be a mini referendum with 65% agreeing before it could be done. In the age of mobile phones, that need not be a big hurdle. It would mean people knew exactly what they were voting for at a GE.

I think Labour has made a very disappointing start. I don't object to means testing as a concept. I object to setting the bar so low that unnecessary and unwarranted misery is inflicted on people who have tried hard to provide for themselves.

I've never applied for the bus pass, I think you need to claim it.

I do get free prescriptions, some of which I think I could get by without but doctors actually just put them on repeat and they just stay there for ever, you rarely get a chance to discuss whether you still need them or not.

I feel sufficiently outraged about the WFP removal that I have emailed our newly-elected Labour MP. I don't expect anything to change of course but eagerly await her explanation.
Labour has never been my preferred choice of government. The only consolation is that Jeremy Corbyn is not PM.

@simone_in_wiltshire PPC won't work for me. I only have one repeat prescription and it's not covered by PPC and costs £60. :rolleyespink:

I remember vividly the July 1981 riots, it had been so hot we slept with windows wide open but had to shut them due to noise of sirens in the nearest town some miles away.

Let's start with MP perks. Subsidising luxury food is an abomination in a society where someone on about £11k has their fuel allowance withdrawn. It won't save much, but it's the principle. I believe MPs get an allowance for utility bills. That should be axed immediately. Their salaries are well above pension credit level. Then, if they use a private jet, they should pay the difference between this and a standard flight out of their own pocket. If tax-payer money is short, it must not be frittered away on such unnecessary things.

I'm sure if we knew the half of what they get up to at our expense, my list of ideas could be expanded.

What happens if you can't pay? Do you have to take out loans against the property?

Re free travel, I'd be happy to see that means tested. I know two people who are in the higher income tax bracket, but travel round the whole of London free. It seems to me that is not sensible.

I'm sure there were riots more recently during other hot spells.
                          Possibly 10yrs ago?

The problem with trying to squeeze MPs is they are already lower rewarded than equivalent positions in companies. This is one reason why those better qualified seek jobs away from politics. Hence you get the useless idiots in charge who can't find better paid jobs.

Couple that with the risks MPs take with so many nutcases about these day, thinking about David Amess and Jo Cox as examples.

"You will own nothing, and be happy..." - - seems less and less like a conspiracy theory by the day.

It was around 15 years ago as we were living in our last house at the time - ironically, the last time Labour were in power.
