With respect, there are other significant differences too - most folks that work for businesses don't get £3400 heating allowance, subsidised bars in their workplace and are subject to contracts that mean they have to deliver what they have been specified to deliver, or get sacked. Some of the things that politicians say and do (even tweet!) would have the rest of us on the carpet and sacked... aye, and never get a job of a similar grade again, let alone earn money "after dinner speaking"

The disdain that the "haves" hold for the rest of society now is far more than it ever was. It is an "I'm alright Jack" attitude that applies to just about everything, especially when it comes to policies that get pushed, with zero thought of cause and effect. People have had enough - ordinary people, not thugs, are at breaking point

It shouldn't be a job you do for the reward. Like nursing ... or teaching. You still get very dedicated people in those jobs, without offering a bunch of perks. And what qualifications do you need to be an MP? Arguably, fewer lawyers and more ordinary folk with common sense would make for a more representative HoC.

No one is ever safe from a nutcase, not even children in a dance class.

I've lost my secateur(s?) sharpener. It works well. It also sharpens lots of other things, apparently, but I've never worked out how.
How do I find it without buying another one? This method usually works within a couple of days but I really don't need two.

Indeed and I can think of some that have that mind set.

It makes my blood go cold.

Without belittling that event MPs and all politicians are on a pedestal constantly and are targets for all kinds of looneys, getting online abuse, death threats and worse. It takes a special sort of person to put themselves in the firing line trying to do public service.

I agree people in the public eye making decisions some may not like have received appalling online abuse. The media is complicit by making MPs "personalities" through so much air-time and reporting. Recording of HoC proceedings probably hasn't helped either.

I'm not trying to defend MPs just pointing out that we get the worst of the bunch because private companies pay more and therefore attract the best.

I worked for many companies that had subsidised meals and bars not just for the execs but for the workers too. Usually they were segregated so the bosses had the Golden Trough with posher meals and us plebs had a canteen. I was a bit shocked when I found a job with a small company that had non of those perks. I soon went back to the previous company, it was wonderful, we had a doctor and nurse on site, hairdresser, and a small bank opened at lunchtimes, as well as the very active social club for runs to the theatre, seaside etc. I think all big companies had something similar and most have probably fallen by the wayside now. Let's face it the House of Commons is still living in a bygone age when things like that were the norm.

I did hear of some half-baked plan to make it impossible for a mortgage to be taken out on a home without a heat pump here. The result would be big companies buying up properties cheaply for cash, as owners without the money to comply would have no other market to sell to. It would pool even more of the available housing stock in the hands of the few.

As @Fat Controller says, "you will own nothing" begins to look less like paranoia and more like an engineered outcome when you think through to the endpoint such schemes might lead to.

I had a PPC for a few years, until one pharmacist told me I was entitled to free prescriptions because of my epilepsy.
It means I get other prescriptions, not for my epilepsy, free of charge.
I've never driven a car, so am entitled to free bus travel - something I've never taken advantage of. I've been considering applying for the last couple of years, but I'm wondering whether there's any point now, as Labour will probably withdraw it anyway.
I do have a disabled persons Railcard, but have to buy it, in order to get a third off.

I would be inclined to get the free bus pass anyway as they may not take it away.

I really don't get all this negativity. The Tories left the economy in tatters. We all knew there wouldn't be enough to pay for everything we would wish. The Tories if they'd got in would definitely have needed to make cuts eventually, but their perspective would have been to protect the rich. What good is a tax cut if the money you've gained is swallowed up by the cost of living?

This was just sent to me - maybe this sums up why there is a deal of negativity.

Oh, and Labour apparently left the economy in tatters at the end of their last tenure - seems whenever there is a change of tenure, the new crew say that the old crew left the economy in tatters.

I'm still waiting for the new government to attack the rich, up till now, and very quickly, they have attacked the pensioners.
Nobody else as far as I can make out.:dunno:

Yes I agree the economy needs sorting out, I'm just wondering what section of the public will be paying the price.
Good job we got the pension rise in back in April, because I beginning to think there wont be any more rises in the pipeline.

Personally tax cuts dont effect me that much, a tax cut only helps if you have a decent income.

                        • The riots would have happened anyway.
                        • The migrants would've arrived anyway
                        • Soldier probably stabbed anyway
                        • What were the Tories going to do with the full to bursting prisons
                        • We need millions of homes. The grey belt seems a reasonable option. However, if all the empty properties were occupied and instead of building tower blocks of offices that nobody wants , that might be a solution to calm the nimby
                        • Something needs to be done about energy. Wind farms are one of the possibilities.
                        • I've probably missed out one or two points but that list is a load of nonsense
