I was wondering very similar just the other day - I've got a cracker of a sore finger that I think has a bit of a skelf or shard of metal in it; I was getting a wee bit of crud out of it initially, but that stopped and since then it has swollen and swollen around the top of the finger a bit. It goes down for a day or two then builds over a day (yesterday was one of those days) to the point it gets really angry and then subsides again over the next day or so, before the cycle starts again. If it doesn't pop before long, I think I will have to try and see a doctor

Potentially. They are currently being charged with 'Violent Disorder' but future cases may be charged with 'Riot' which apparently has much longer sentences available. It seems crazy to me that they weren't charged with riot from the outset, as that is precisely what was happening.

I suppose it depends on their age - at best, some sort of community service. I think that is one of the biggest ways we have gone wrong... absolute loss of respect for others and for our surroundings. I'm that guy who cleans the street in front of the house and neighbours houses either side, but there are others in the street who simply don't care.... massive weeds growing out under walls and fences, litter lying about etc... it is a vicious circle as far as I am concerned.

The government were very careful not to classify it as riot - because if it was, it would mean that they were on the hook to pay for the damage rather than insurance companies and local authority budgets

No respect for anyone or anything @Fat Controller . I've seen a huge decline in the last five years or so. When my girls were young, if either of them had done something they shouldn't, and a parent/adult had come to the door, I'd have given them merry hell and they'd get a punishment, because I'd assume that the person at the door had reason to come round, and was genuine. Nowadays, it's the other way round - 'my wee Johnnie would never do that'....
The lack of basic parenting I see regularly is very depressing, but when you see the way many adults behave, it's not surprising that the offspring are behaving the way they do, because that's the example they have. My daughter sees it every day where she works.

I was thinking the same about insurance as there always seems to be that word Riot in the small print.

I never met Germolene when I was a young’un. My family’s response to any injury was a clip round the ear and the observation “Well, you’ll not do that again”.

But then a vet introduced me to a substance called ichthammol. It’s a tarry liquid derived from the oils of prehistoric fish, I believe.

You apply it to anything, from a dirty splinter in a finger to a nasty spot, cover it with a fairly substantial bit of cotton wool and a plaster, leave it overnight and in the morning your troubles are over. Unless it leaked into the sheets, in which case they are only just beginning. :):)

Here is the one I was sold about twenty years ago and the tin is still half full.

Gold Label Blemish & Big Knee Application | Ayr Equestrian

I haven't tested it on my big knees, so I can’t say if it works on those too.

            Smaller versions are available.

It is not only the parents - there are some really odd views going around generally... we had a thing pop up in our local FB group the other day where someone said their son was in Boots in Ashford and a youth had come in, stolen a load of baby milk and then left without being challenged by the staff. His son had apparently seen this youth at the station shortly afterwards, with a knife, so went back to tell the Boots staff who said they would report it as this youth was a regular. This woman was giving the staff dogs abuse for not challenging this youth as were others, pulling the 'when Boots is out of money they will be out of a job and deserve it' routine.

I might have been somewhat less than diplomatic when I reminded them that Boots staff are paid minimum wage, so why would they challenge someone that is armed with a knife over a few tubs of baby formula and pointed out that it was down to the police to be dealing with the situation; another woman then laid into me, saying they must not have been reporting it and it was disgusting yada yada yada... so I informed her that they were reporting it, as they did at all the other Boots stores around us that were also seeing the same thing. And she came back... "How do you know they are reporting it? They are all useless... etc" - - she soon changed her tune when I informed her that Mrs C works as a manager for Boots in a nearby larger store, and they are putting in multiple reports every single day.

Meanwhile, another warrior waded in that it was only right that it was getting stolen because it was Boots own fault because it was too expensive and that would be some parent in need to feed their wee baby... what, six tins every day???

Not only have we gone soft on crimes such as shoplifting which in turn has bred further, worse crimes, but we've also lost our compass I think - - of all the comments made, not one was criticising the youth with the knife... not a single one.

do you have one of the chemists near you that can deal with minor injuries?

Kaolin poltice slapped on, red hot and left for a day.
                I think it worked.

Does that ichthammol smell a bit like crude oil or creosote?

Well my goodness, I didn't think that would still be available!! We used to have a tin of that knocking about on the farm, albeit it wasn't used that often. Thank you @Tidemark, that might just be the solution to my problem

Lisa is sending a photo to the prescribing pharmacist at her work as they have that service, plus it saves me queuing... but, she has a feeling they don't do things like swollen digits. The really odd thing is, when we try to photograph it, it doesn't show the redness or swelling very well, nor does it show the sort of light bluey-purple tinge either. It was really, really, angry last night - yet overnight seems to have settled back a bit, so it will probably be Tuesday when it goes mental again.

I have been using Hibiscrub (well, the equine version thereof) but it isn't making any difference.

You have my sympathy. I have a blackberry thorn in the tip of one of my fingers. I cannot see it but boy does it hurt when I put pressure on it. I have tried digging around with a needle to find it but no luck so far. I was hoping it would fester out but it is taking its time. I put some Germolene on a plaster on my finger to speed things up.
