I agree it hasn't been a good summer overall, but I think I said earlier possibly in another thread that I remember a week at the end of June and another week or 10 days in July that were pretty warm, August has been better here, hence all the people wanting rain, but not a great summer due to the cold start IMO.

I know people slag off the Met office but I prefer it to all those weird amateur types that like to sensationalise the weather.

If you go through enough of them these days you will always find someone forecasting whatever kind of weather you prefer I find.
Truth is anything longer than a week is a total guess.

 

I think your part of the country generally has the best of the weather. Last year we literally had 2 good weeks in June and rubbish weather for the rest of the year. Nothing close to a heatwave at any time and rarely more than a couple of days without at least showers.

 

We are really lucky down here, @KT53. We don't get intense heatwaves or deep freezes. Almost every afternoon there is a breeze and it can be quite windy, but not damagingly so. Pretty maritime, all in all.

 

It's certainly been very noticeable this year for constant strong winds on the West Somerset coast. A couple of mini heat waves recently but even given the usual vagaries of the British weather, a pretty poor year here so far.

 

You'd think universities would have more important things to do @Songbird - like having proper courses for folk to study.

@fairygirl ,the latest is the now forbidden word Pet when talking to someone. This is a staple word up here in the North East. Everyone is “ Pet” but is now seen as sexist and derogatory by the Uni.Woke is taking over. I originate from Lancashire where everyone is Love. In fact, I called someone love yesterday but, fortunately, I wasn’t hauled over the coals and beaten for insurrection.

 

I heard about that the other day on the radio @Songbird. It's always about context, but I know exactly what you mean. Utterly bonkers. Maybe they should all be forced to bingewatch Vera....
I sometimes call young lads or girls 'love' if they've been helpful in some way, just because it's how I am, or even if I'm asking if they're ok, as I did one day in a shop when the young lad stacking shelves looked like he was going to faint. Hen is a common Glaswegian term, and one I dislike, but again - it depends on how it's being used.
Common parlance - in any area, is just part of what makes the UK so interesting. So many local dialects etc, in what is really a very small place.

Like you, I've not been hauled over the coals either for it....yet

My wife hates it when, in a restaurant for example, the question is posed. "What do you guys want?"
I see her point. I'd hate to be addressed as a girl!!
To me, "love" is fine, so long as it's from a woman.

One of our old neighbours always used to address my wife as "babe"! It was only because the gentleman concerned couldn't remember her name, it turned out.

 

I wasn't aware of the Universities attempted ban on certain words. The Mum and Dad thing is utterly ridiculous - presumably even the use of Parent is now frowned upon??
The universities would be far better off in banning the use of "Like" and "Y'know" which are liberally scattered throghout even the shortest sentence.
How on earth can anyone possibly be offended by the use of "Love" or "Pet" or whatever is common usage in different areas ( down here it's "M'Dear " ). As said, it's about context but it's something of a joke when you consider the amount of "Sexting" which is currently rife whatever the age group.

 

So what is it alright to be called, I once referred to a company rep over the phone as "you people", I didn't mean anything by it, but they slammed the phone down on me.

 

I don't know, but "canny" might cause some concern here in Yorkshire and I'm pretty sure "alreet hinny" would cause more than an odd stare here!

 

You have a shrub you don't want. To save a lot of effort, you hope it will do the decent thing and die. So you do all of the wrong things like bad pruning that are bound to introduce disease . What does it do?

Indeed. I did my best with Grandmother's Potentilla (the only plant I strongly dislike, being a thicket of dry sticks most of the year and so brittle that kids are told not to play near it when it offers some greenery and flowers. We had a small hedge of it when I was a kid. )

Anyways, I thought that my ruthless unseasonal hacking back did the thing, combined with the dog digging up most of the roots to make a nest- and hey how, Grandmother called me to thank for the care as it had never flowered better

Regarding the Pet/ Love thing, Newcastle is wonderful I'm often addressed as Flower and my daughter was told to "just take a seat Petal" when her card failed to buy a bus ticket.

Perhaps the wordings are sexists or old fashioned, but the intention is genuine and good.

 

I will certainly try to remember that one!
