As far as tax rises go; just remember that when a salary goes up so does the tax paid, the NI and the pension contribution. Also having more disposable money will increase the VAT take and generally make people and the economy better.

The thing is, they are getting the benefit of the increased tax on higher salaries but then also seeking to increase the percentage of salary paid as well - plus, doing so by stealth mostly, purely so they can claim that they didn't raise taxes for working people. Fiscal drag for a starter for ten will see more people paying tax as salaries rise and tax thresholds don't - again, hurting those with the least. And the additional 10p on fuel tax... that is going to hit every single person whether they have a car or not. As always, the law of unintended consequences has not been considered - but hey, it is OK, because the junior doctors and train drivers have their pay rise...

I agree, that's how it is supposed to work, but it only works for those that get the pay rises.
Because it also pushes up inflation.

As with all things some people get left behind if they don't have political clout.

I think he has already ensured this will be a one-term Labour gov.

Why do politicians keep announcing things are a "once in a generation" opportunity? It is a completely meaningless statement as any decision can be reversed or revisited at the drop of a hat as soon as it is serves some purpose to do so, without any reference to whether the public voted for this or support it. Total drivel to pretend otherwise.

I'm never quite sure what period of time a generation is . We were taught that it is approximately 20 years but I think it is a flexible figure. Back in 'the old days' it was quite common to have children at 15 or 16 (or earlier in some cases) but nowadays they say that a lot of people aren't having children until they are in their thirties. So does the terminology need to change?

It's how all politicians speak, along with other meaningless phrases such as "let me make this quite clear" and then go on to confuse matters. They are buying time so they can either avoid questions or come up with more obfuscation.

Another phrase I really hate is when they say "listen", what do they think people are doing? There is a, still relevant, sketch written by P G Wodehouse in one of his books where a character is talking on the phone long distance to the USA and the other end keeps coming out with these filler phrases, the character loses his temper saying it's costing me a guinea a minute to listen to you saying nothing.

Unless he turns things around, and saying it's going to take 10yrs is not what people want to hear.
I think he forgot to mention that in the run up to the election.
So he's basically saying he needs two terms.
                  It's definitely back to austerity.
The good times didn't last long, I think I blinked.

He's still got 5 years to totally **** up the country. Because of the massive majority nobody can stop them doing whatever they want. I hope those who would normally have voted Conservative but decided not to 'in protest' now realise what they have unleashed on the country.

The thing is @KT53, you can only vote for what's on the ballot paper, so lots of people are forced to tick the least worst option. Cameron wasn't a good option. May wasn't. Boris wasn't. (And we had no choice at all re Truss or Sunak.) But they seemed better than the alternatives, so got in.

He only has a massive majority in the house of commons, not amongst the electorate.
It could be a year or two, but if things don't start getting better at some point it will come back to bite him.
And I think he knows it.

I still wonder if he will be in charge for a whole term.
