Just spoken with my daughter and she has decided to leave a donation to the RNLI and they will write her will for nothing, how solicitors can justify their fees for this type of work is beyond me. Instead of charging a reasonable amount they will now get nothing from her. Perhaps if more people refused their exorbitant fees they would be more realistic and increase their business by charging considerably less for let’s face it, pretty straight forward work.

 

Yes, their offices use the same type of software apps as in those do-it-yourself programs, albeit a lot more sophisticated. Still canned as far as I can tell. They do the same with just about every other form of law except actual criminal trials. Even family law is nothing but a bunch of canned forms over here and it still seems the client with the most time/money is the winner no matter what their case entails.

 

I need to get a will written I think, difficult know who to leave the overdraft to.

 

A Will can be witnessed by anybody. They just have to be present when you sign the Will.

 

You can always be relied upon to bring a laugh to the proceedings.

 

I sorted my will out years ago. I've even made changes since then. Almost died four times, so I made it a priority.
It's never too early, but it can be too late.

 

Our Wills all in place. We did ours through our chosen charity and was happy to pay their set donation.

 

Mine is about two lines long. I like simplicity.

 

@pete Yes I agree with you on the "professional" bit - I'm not quite sure what constitutes a professional these days. However, if it makes life ( or death ) easier and cheaper, it's a case of whether you can bear to " tug your forelock " , smile to yourself and forget it or prefer to pay more and get another professional to do it for you.

Whichever method anyone chooses, a completely independant witness is essential I think.

 

'Professionals' was usually taken to be those people who often had gone to university and had gained professional qualifications, i.e. doctors, lawyers, JPs, teachers, architects etc. Dates back to the time when most of the general population were uneducated and might not have understood what it was they were witnessing.

Nowadays it doesn't matter. Back in the day, although I didn't get the chance to go to university, I did get later professional qualifications in law so was often called upon to witness Wills and certify other documents. Officially I became a Fellow!!!

 

An example of a "professional" is someone who goes on strike for a 35% pay rise and lets down to public.
There is no such thing as a true "professional" in that context these days.

I can remember years ago having to get a family GP to sign a passport application and them charging for their signature, I certainly hope that practice is dead and buried these days.

 

That is so nice of you @Fat Controller ! I've had a rewarding week but still have to moan about what a big pain it was to accomplish anything.

I've had a power window not operating on the mustang passenger for nearly a year now and every time I went to have a go at tracking down the problem something else came up or it got blistering hot and I won't try to fiddle with little wires in the winter. Then the lock on the passenger side stopped operating. Both failed using either the driver switch or the passenger's. Both failing said definite power problem across the car.

Tracing those stupid wires is a real p.i.t.a. but I found where the problem was, finally. Fixed that. So the power lock is working again. The window still would not react to either control so I had to trace that down because power was reaching that side. It came down to the relay in the passenger switch. I've ordered a new switch that will get here next week.

But all of the messing about with taking off door panels and crawling under the dashboard really made me a bit steamed.

And after I repaired my mains gas heater that is in the greenhouse, I decided to take the feet off it since I have it hanging on the wall and the feet jut out and press against the side. I couldn't remove the feet before hanging it because the natural gas hose would be exposed to possible damage because of the way it attaches to a pipe between where the feet are and they are what kept it elevated enough to accommodate the wide bend needed if sitting on the floor. Well, you have to get totally prone and right under the darned thing to see the leg screws and remove them.

Who are these geniuses that design this stuff! Moan over...
