        As loose mushrooms are becoming scarce in SM's ( at least as I am experiencing ), I get a box/tray, use what I need and turn the rest into Soup - delicious and freezes well too.
        Not much use to you tho @pete :biggrin:

          They're fine in the fridge for a couple of days in their sealed container :blue thumb:

          That's what we do too. We don't use water for the soup but tinned coconut milk (60%+ coconut extract). It makes a nice flavoursome creamy soup. We add Marigold veggie stock granules to taste. :)

            @shiney I just use semi skimmed milk for mine with salt, pepper and cornflour. Works a treat. Also use it as a base for a slightly heartier meal.........add Chick Peas and Quorn pieces and a few Peas for colour - not bad for a quick meal.
            Oops - not really a Moan is it :biggrin:

              Mushrooms onion garlic thyme. Sweat until the juices run out of the mushrooms . Stock ( any kind but home made is better . Oxo at a pinch )Then add 6fennel seeds. No more. No less.
              Whizz in a blender. Job done.

              That's not a view I share! After liberally dosing my borders with local cow manure, I used to be able to harvest barrowloads of field mushrooms in the garden. Then the one and only pine tree produced cepes de pin all around itself. Then we had a go at growing pleurotes on poplar logs....What I can't get into is scrambling about in brambly undergrowth in the local woods, searching for wild mushrooms. Life's too short :biggrin:

                Suspiciously like you could be related to my daughter who is equally considers mushrooms to be an abomination. Sure fire way to wind her up is to be frying mushrooms as she walks through the door having been happily in a mushroom free zone ( ie her flat) for a week. Her other absolute pet hate.                     Olives are not always bitter. Depends on whether they're green or black, where they're from and what's been done to them since they were picked.

                    OH and I love mushrooms but I don't like shitake or oyster cos of their texture. Possum thinks she doesn't like any of them but I do occasionally hide them in winter bakes and casseroles so, again, it's texture not flavour.

                    As for old people being a drain on the state, they can be, but usually because they have chronic illnesses that could have been avoided with better health care and management. The NHS would function a lot better and be able to treat serious illness so much better if people didn't burden it with self-inflicted obesity, smoking and alcohol related disease. Teaching nutrition to children and parents would be a start.

                    We gardeners know that if you want plants with healthy foliage you provide nitrogen, just as they need phosphorus and potassium to get good flowers and fruits plus some essential minerals. If we applied that to our own bodies - balancing proteins, carbs, fibre, amino acids, vitamins and minerals for maximum performance - we'd be a lot healthier and cost the NHS a lot less in time, money and services.

                          That smell was obviously reason why my first cat 30 years ago was over the moon when ever I gave her green olives. She didn't eat them but rolled and rubbed her head like it was cat mint.

                            I cut the green rubber marbles in half and include them on cheese on toast and give them a good grilling. It has to be extra mature cheddar too. Nice and salty. You can get them with chillies in - even better.

                              My daughters have never liked mushrooms, but the younger one now has to do her own cooking, and is trying to be healthy, so she's incorporating mushrooms and carrots into her bolognese or chilli etc. I've given her the small blender I have so that she can blend some of those and add them, and she won't really notice the taste! She's keeping a mix in the freezer to add to sauces, because she can't get loose mushrooms and she would struggle to use a pack quickly.

                              What was funny was, when I took the blender over, she asked what I used it for as it was so small. She laughed when I said we had come full circle, because that's what I used when she and her sister were little - and it was often for blending things like carrots and mushrooms to add to their bolognese and disguise them....:heehee:

                              They aren't my favourite veg by any means but I like them in a stir fry. It's easy for them to be rubbery, as you say @pete.
