Dangerous dogs are only dangerous because their owners have encouraged them to be so. Any young puppy can be trained to be a friendly pal who slobbers all over you or a vicious menace that attacks the postman.

It’s the owners that should be muzzled and forbidden to ever own another dog.

That's horrific Jack, my heartfelt sympathies. I see no possible reason for 'muscle' dogs to be kept as pets.
Will you ask the council to intervene and have them removed from the family?

I went into the Range in Carmarthen yesterday and when I got to the till I heard
"HO HO HO Merry Chriiiiiiistmaaaaaas !" coming from a Santa automaton standing near-by :frown:
I must have looked horrified in my shorts and tee shirt on a warm sunny day, and the chap at the till said "I have to listen to that all day and I'm fed up with it already"

I resisted going to Farmyard Nurseries for bulbs, but I can go there next week

Perhaps the owners of the dogs should be locked up for having a dangerous weapon, which they allowed to be used on a person and their dog.

Not wanting to stereotype anyone, but it's mostly a certain kind of person that owns these bully type dogs.
It's usually an extension of their personality.
Having one is OK, in my view, if you are a responsible owner, why two or three or more seems totally stupid.
You then have the startings of a pack and they feed off one another rather than the owner who has no chance of controlling them.

Locked up? They should be put down along with their animals.

I wouldn't go quite that far :) ... but I do think every dog should be registered as owned by a named adult who is responsible for any problems. One adult - one dog. No more.

Sounds good but I don't see it working in practice.
The hunting brigade would be the first to have a problem with that idea.

But surely owning more than one dog is not really the problem, two miniature poodles are no likely to kill any one for instance.
Problems mostly arise by knee jerk reactions from stupid government decisions.
They ban certain breeds and then try to work out how you define that breed.
The breeders of the said dogs then just move to breeding something that is slightly different.
Dog breeders, good and bad are not the most moral of people imo.
Never liked the stupid prices they charge.

Do the hunting brigade count as domestic pet owners?

I agree there would be exceptions, eg if someone died leaving a pet to be cared for by someone who already had one, but some rules are needed due to the explosion in dog ownership.

I can still remember buying a licence for my dog every year. Cost 7 shillings and 6 pence.

And our next door neighbours never bothered.

None of this works unless its enforced.

And nobody who is breeding bullies is going to abide by the law.

Anyone can make laws but lets face it, shop lifting is against the law, but does that stop it.

Laws only apply to the the law abiding, and cause those problems, something governments seem to find hard to grasp for some reason.

All dogs have the capacity to surprise you, that's why people shouldn't own these huge strong dogs that they can't physically restrain in an emergency.

It was cheaper for a black and white dog.

We only owned one dog - a black Lab type which we rescued from a Police pound in 1968. He travelled throughout Europe with us for 9 months that year and had to do 6 months quarrantine on our return. Luckily the quarantine kennels were close by so we could visit him almost every day. Cost a fair bit in kennel fees tho. Friends of my parents ( adults !! ) were rather scathing that we should have gone to such trouble and expense and suggested we would have been wiser to dump our dog at Calais and sailed back without him.
One of the reasons I get fed up with hearing about pet owners who seem incapable of accepting responsibility for their pets even in this day and age. As with some other issues, always someone else to put the responsibility/blame on - never yourself.
                              Rant over :)
