@ViewAhead you can probably find the manual on line, maybe the manufacturer's site.
I'd also contact the installer and ask them to have a look and get them to demonstrate that it operates properly, that's a job for tomorrow though.

 

Its that valve that has given up on my system, when set to hot water only it heats up the radiators as well, mine is nearly 40yrs old though.

 

Sounds like a possible wiring problem, but then what do I know.

 

Sounds like an odd system. I assumed combi also and in most instances you would not have a hot water tank for storage unless a very large house or you use a lot of hot water. @JWK seems to know about these external valves, and you can still buy them (and 2 port). All sound pretty low tech to me, but like @pete what would I know! Think your best bet is call the installer, and hope they don't say "it's how it works"!!!

 

Could be the original. I know these do sometimes "stick" in the hot water position when the heating is off for 6 months.

I have a different person coming to disconnect my gas hob in the kitchen on Friday, so I'll run it past him as he's done all my boiler work for the last 20 yrs. (He couldn't install the new one as it required roof work to put in a new flue and he's not insured for that.)

They are! I'm just bucking the trend! A combi would have been tricky to install here and I would have had to rip out the shower, so I went with a replacement like the one I already had.

 

Crikey! Inconvenient in a summer heatwave. Forty yrs is impressive! Is it noisy? My old one sounded like a class of 6 yr olds let loose on a set of percussion instruments. My new one is whisper quiet, but my gas usage has stayed exactly the same as last yr, so it doesn't seem more efficient, though maybe any difference will show up through the winter months.

 

I just turn the rads off, bit of a bind but cant really afford to run all of them anyway.

 

@pete we have a 40 year old boiler too and the exact same thing happens to us - turned the water on this morning and the radiators came on. Our zone valve, a Honeywell V4073A 1039 mid-position 3 port valve, is the likely culprit sticking in mid-position. Hubby is going to replace ours (just the zone valve). Still hanging onto the old boiler.

 

My boiler is only 20 yrs old its the valve that is nearly 40.
Those old boilers just keep going, so in order to make you buy new ones they stop making new parts for them.

 

The boiler in the place we moved into last winter, was so old, spare parts couldn't be obtained. We had it replaced in the spring, even though the old one had not broken down.
No thermostat, and no-one would provide boiler cover.
The new one is heaps better - it should be, given the cost and upheaval - and guaranteed for twelve years. It is far more efficient, and has a thermostat, with greater control - rather than on or off.
Should be able to relax this winter.

 

Even my 40 yrs old system has a thermostat.
