Lettuce admittedly won't be sufficient on it's own to stifle your hunger. The likes of veg, potatoes, pasta /rice are affordable if you are prepared to learn how to cook and make a meal from them. Decent cereals and long life milk will keep and would certainly provide a better breakfast than a cereal bar. Just a bit of forward planning required. The "fast food" stuff is exactly that - very little needed except a blast in a micro wave. However, as everyone knows, they are highly processed (including all sorts of stuff you don't actually need ) not only for "shelf life" but with the intention of making you feel as if you have had a good meal - at least for a few hours. They are expensive too from what I've seen in shops/supermarkets.
Rationing during WW2 and for some years afterwards taught people to be not only economical but also how to produce a meal with limited resources. As time has gone on, habits have changed - not for the better in many respects.
As for bread, weren't bakers in the victorian era renowned for bulking out the flour with the likes of sawdust ?

 

Oh the Victorians were masters of food additives.

I think the secret to cake making is to not drop it on the floor as you put it into the oven. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve done that.

 

Proper sourdough is the complete antithesis of 'fast food' and that concoction the stupormarkets call sourdough

 

Regarding the sour dough, surely all the so called good bacteria is killed in the cooking process.
It's just stupid that it's better for you.

Just a minor thing but how is a female supposed to get a pee sample into that container without getting her hands wet?
