A couple of days ago I commented on poor lane discipline when I was on the motorway. I've realised my explanation of the situation could be misinterpreted. I said there was nothing for a couple of hundred yards ahead or behind me. By that I didn't mean I was hopping in and out of the inside lane every couple of hundred yards. We were travelling at the same speed, or close to it, as traffic in lane 2 and there were no HGVs or other slower moving vehicles close in lane 1 at the time. I travelled at least a mile, probably more, before needing to pull out into lane 2.

The best ride I ever had was in 2021 when I had to pick up OH from Heathrow on a Saturday afternoon. For some reasons, all cars on all lanes had decided to drive 74 mph, which was 4 miles faster than the Highway code allows. No idiot on the outer lane, no lorry on the inner lane, no obstacle on any lane. So we all drove surrounded by the same cars for 40 minutes up to junction 6 (Windsor A332) in the same speed. It was like surfing along the M4.
      That's the way.

Got a letter yesterday telling me I can apply for pension credit?
I know I wouldn't get it so assume they are sending letters to all pensioners.
Wonder how much that's going to cost.

Not forgetting the voluntary lump sums which some have paid in order to ensure a 'decent' pension. All colours of government have known for decades that a pension crisis was building, with an increasing gap between contributions and payments. Instead of looking at better ways of investing the billions received and ring-fencing the contributions for the purpose they were intended, they've shuffled the responsibility onto the general public, firstly with dodgy, stock market-based private pensions and then with ever-increasing pensionable ages. As for the penalising of responsible people to finance the lazy and feckless...don't get me started! :mute: We've got exactly the same scenario here in France now. The main difference being that the French might, just might still have the guts to rise up and put a stop to politicians' arrogance and incompetence. The trouble is, whereas when you decapitate a monarch and his successors, it clears the air, getting rid of a politician just makes way for more scum to rise to the top.

With a monarch, there are always more successors waiting in the wings unfortunately, but I take your point. ;)

@KT53, I am sure your driving skills are exemplary. :pathd: As are mine, naturally.

Add to that the ones that will suddenly find they qualify, it could possibly work out more expensive.

We have also had letters telling us we may be entitled to the winter fuel allowance, they already know we are not on benefits so why waste postage. It needs a small army of civil servants sending out unnecessary letters, they don't talk to the other small army that keeps the records.

We are also getting countless reminders from the NHS about our flu and covid jabs, they are booked for this weekend but they send out reminders and also more invitations in case we haven't booked. Nothing is joined up but I guess these are being sent by stupid computers, at least SMS texts and NHS app notifications cost a fraction of a stamp.

I kept getting text messages about the covid jab but they were no reply messages.
So the only way to stop them was to call the doctors surgery, and you know how easy that is, :frown:plus they are always telling us they are very busy.

Some years ago we joined the M5 at Exeter on a Friday morning and the traffic was so heavy that all 3 lanes proceeded at a steady 30mph all the way to Birmingham. No one changed lane. It took 6 hours, but was quite relaxing.

We kept getting those but we went on the NHS site (can't remember whether it was for our own records - maybe need a jab for memory :roflol:) and told them not to give us reminders as we always get them from our GP. Not received any since apart for one about this new RSV.
