And even more homes being flooded due to where they are being built. Local Authorities are bad enough for allowing building on flood plains, but national control will mean people with absolutely no knowledge, or interest, making the decisions. We're moving towards an authoritarian regime much faster than even I expected.

It's a real worry. Authoritarianism never works out well for ordinary citizens, but once it takes hold, it is very difficult to shift without huge disruption and often extensive loss of life. Just this week, Seoul could have tipped into calamity simply as a result of one authoritarian move by one person who decided unilaterally that clinging to power justified extreme violence against those he purported to "lead".

Thanks for the tip, @cactus_girl - might give that a try, though I suspect the door needs re-hanging, or replacing. Unscrewing the middle hinge showed that the door has definitely warped. The squawk continues...

I have a similar problem with the back door @Liriodendron . It doesn't actually sqawk just takes a lot of effort to open/close.
I suppose at least you could pretend you have a pet Parrot until you manage to fix it. Good luck anyway:)

That is a great tip, @cactus_girl, will use that on my squeaky hinges :D
I have the opposite problem, a surplus of candle wax in the wrong place - managed to get candle-wax dripping into my sink and now it is blocked...gah!

Pour a couple of kettles of very hot water down - that should melt the wax and get it moving.

Why is everywhere and everything so noisy?

I met The Girls in town as we live quite a bit afar so meeting in town is convenient for all. The pub was absolutely full, noisy for just the chatter and on top of it, the music was on.

Conversation was reduced to some shouted remarks and "yeah I'm good and you?"s when we really wanted just to have a drink and talk.

I don't want to meet The Girls in "Yer Olde Coffee Shoppe", I want to pop into a normal pub, have a drink and chatter so that we can actually have a conversation and hear what everyone is saying.

                  Quiet pub, please :frown:

Do they exist? I don't go to pubs, except to some that have restaurants, as I can't stand noisy places. Everywhere seems much noisier nowadays.

Even the large Tesco near us had loud music playing - until I had a moan to their head office. Why would they want to play loud music?

I believe our ASDA has a quiet hour for us oldies, when they don't play music or bing bong the staff. Why don't they have a noisy hour instead?

Actually, my hearing is getting worse . It used to be hyper sensitive and they had to set the ultrasonics of our burglar alarm so that dogs and shiney couldn't hear it. They did a special test to check that I could hear it before they would change the system. I still have very sensitive hearing but am now having trouble with distinguishing female voices that talk with a high pitch with a southern states of the U.S. accent. :noidea:

Believe me, most English can’t understand that kind of English spoken in the South and middle of the States. Hearing aids are not coping well with that @shiney
