Maybe not every ones idea of chips but I don't like soggy ones, and cant stand oven chips, I use a deep fat frier and frozen chips, it works for me, crispy on the outside and flowery inside.

Often chip shop chips are a soggy mess I find.

 

I like armadillos ... soft in the middle, crispy on the outside.

 

I have a deep fat fryer but have used it twice in the last 30 years. Can't stand the smell of the hot fat in the kitchen. Been thinking about plugging it in outside on the terrace in warmer weather but that's not when we want chips.

Don't mind oven chips now that I've found frozen Belgian chips at the SM but, TBH, I prefer new potatoes roasted with garlic and rosemary or gratin dauphinoise or tartiflette or roast wseet potatoes.

There are a couple of restaurants not too far away that do butterflied chips - extra surface for crisping - but proper Belgian chips are best and there aren't any nearby here. Has to be mayonnaise too, not malt vinegar or ketchup.

 

We used to buy them loose from the local newsagent, woodbine and No5 if memory serves me right. You only needed to carry a lighter to break the ice, still do nowadays. I went to Lincoln to spend Easter with my daughter, she had work on Saturday evening, so I went out for a few pints. On two separate occasions I was asked if I had a light both females and tried to make conversation with me, even though I don't smoke anymore.

The UK banned the sale of packs of ten fags to deter young ones from smoking. I found when buying duty free fags, I smoked more due to cheaper and bought more. When I had none left, I always purchased either packs of ten or 25g of baccy from the local shop so not to smoke as much due to the cost. With cigarette vending machines being banned in public places, going out with a pack of ten you tended not to smoke as much to when they were more ready available, but now you can only buy packs of twenty.

 

Me and my daughter went to Skegness on Easter Sunday and I was really looking forward to having fish and chips at "Trawlers Catch" they were packed with at least 50+ in the queue. All the fish & chip shops were very busy so we bombed it off and went for a frankfurter with fried onions, not as good as a Cumberland with fried onions and mushrooms but still yummy. We have a really nice fish and chip shop, £6.95 for medium fish and chips, I only add vinegar and grounded pepper when I get home so nothing goes soggy, no salt for me. I tend to do this 16 mile round trip every other Friday for my mum and dads treat.

 

Have you considered an air fryer, O-V? I scrapped my deep fat fryer years ago in favour of a Tefal Actifry. It does beautiful chips, sauté and roast potatoes, very economical on oil and if you get one with a separate top plate, you can grill meat or fish at the same time as doing the chips. I tried doing onion pakoras in it the other day but that one needs a bit of experimentation

 

I wonder if they broadcasted they were going away on social media!

Quite so. Unless there happened to be a pile of dead bodies where the car had been parked, it would be hard to get their interest, never mind attendance, down here.
