But it's being spun as for the cop30 by the media when locally they just want more infrastructure to connect two growing areas.

It cuts a huge area of rainforest in half and how is anything supposed to get across a 4 lane highway (we have enough problems with bats around here).

Amazon rainforest cut down to build highway for COP climate summit

The area is obviously sprawling so I don't think it will be to long before much more of that green on the map is lost.

I'm certainly not suggesting that any ship at anchor is at fault if another vessel ploughs into it.
At the moment, it would appear that the accident occurred due to incompetancy whether by the Captain or his crew. However, if it is correct that the vessel which caused the damage wasn't fit to sail then obviously the blame should be spread wider than just Captain/crew.
I mentioned "conspiracy" somewhat TIC - as @Fat Controller points out, almost anything can be deemed a conspiracy until the truth comes out. I'm not totally convinced this will happen on this occasion. The issue of pollution not withstanding, I guess we should at least be glad that only 1 person lost his life.

I certainly agree that cutting through the forest to make COP30 more easily accessible is ridiculous but the report doesn't explain some of the situation just to make it more dramatic.

That highway has been planned for very many years (I've been to Belem a number of times and they were talking about doing it even back in 1982). That land is very close to the city and the city has been planning on expanding there for some time. There are already some roads and small communities in that forested area between the city and the Guama River to the south of the city.

It's not good for the environment but the logging in the Amazon is hundreds of times worse.

I'm not excusing it and it should be a good opportunity for the environmentalists to publicise the problems in the Amazon but the media seem to, sadly, be ignoring that much bigger problem. :)

China has built a camera that can identify people from a height of 62 kms. So, potentially, a satellite could spy on everyone on earth, identifying who is where.

Now that is a scary thought, as this level of data has potential for significant abuse by govs and other “controllers”. And the argument “If you are doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear” doesn’t hold up. If you are doing something anyone with the data does not want you to do (dictators, despots, authoritarian regimes), you could be tracked down. Add in autonomous killer drones and AI and before you know it, you have planetary control in the hands of the few. :hate-shocked:

The tanker was heading for Immingham.

I see Trump is now proposing a 200% tariff on EU wines and Champagne. He says this will be great for Champagne businesses in the US! Hmmm….

The tanker of US fuel was apparently anchored in a place that ships often anchor while waiting for orders or a berth in port.

That's fine by me. Pearls before swine etc...In any case, the main market has been shifting to Asia for some time now.

Surely the USA can’t make and sell “Champagne” as that’s a protected name. They’d have to call it something else like “Sham pain”.

Re the ship collision - I understand the tanker carrying jet fuel had anchored and then registered its position so that all shipping in the area as well as coastguards and port authorities knew where it was. I assume it was then waiting for a pilot and sufficient tidal clearance before entering harbour.

Any other ship's crew, anywhere in the world, let alone in busy coastal waters that leaves its ship on auto pilot without a watchman is guilty of serious misconduct, endangering human life and marine ecology. Serious consequences for such negligent stupidity are in order.

As for booze sales from EU to USA, I already find champagne over-rated and over-priced and prefer Cava and so-called sparkling wines from other French regions. I'm quite sure tho that it will be lapped up by emerging markets to the east and I rather think the Canadians will like EU booze too now that they're returning USA booze unsold and therefore not payable.

I haven't seen @CanadianLori about lately but hope she is not badly affected by what's going on with tariffs.
