Length of runway was one of the reasons for developing Stansted airport in the 80's. Was said to be long enough to land the Space Shuttle or a B52 safely in an emergency.
Still a fair few military airfields in East Anglia and Lincolnshire.

Manston reportedly has a pretty long runway it was at one time used as an emergency runway for any planes needing to get down because of problems.
They have been trying to get it all built on for years, but I think it's going to open up again now.

Apart from Stansted airport being about 15 minutes away to the north we have three other old airports near us.

One is ten minutes away to the south, was opened in 1916 and is still operational. They used to have an air show every year but that got closed down because it may interfere with Stansted. It used to be good to be able to sit in the garden and watch the Spitfires etc. flying overhead. They still have smaller planes and helicopters using it

Ten minutes to the east is an old WWII airfield that is mainly farmland now but the old control tower is sometimes used for radar testing.

Ten minutes to the west was another airfield first opened during WWI then disused but opened again in WWII. That is now, also, farmland but the old defensive concrete pillboxes are still there.

The local and regional governments here are trying to reopen Doncaster airport. Apparently the Prime minister said he supported it but as far as I know there's been no funding from central government. Same old story, they'd rather spend it in and around London.

The runway was shortened a bit when it was turned into a civil airport to 2894m. I think it was 2900m as an RAF base, to accommodate the Vulcans, and it was also a designated space shuttle alternate. It's also unusually wide (for the UK) at 60m. Heathrow's runways are a good bit longer, 3901m and 3658m, 50m wide. Manchester's are 3048m and 3050m by 45m.

Heathrow is an airport hub, so the extra runway will mean more flights but not everyone will be leaving the airport.
We have norwich airport nearby but it has so few flights that it's not especially worth it. It would be pointless increasing capacity and it's not to dissimilar with other small airports, where if there was a market, they'd already be used.
The country is just London centric and it's where air business and freight wants to be.

I like this space themed political descriptions. I would like to propose that we call politicians our little "neutron stars", given that they seem to be the densest things in the universe.

The reopening of Manston is not government funded as far as I know, i think it's a company called Riveroak, unless things have all changed again.

Yes you re correct Pete. The plans show the most up to date and hi-tech airport in the UK, with many green additions.

Maybe the govt. should actually use a form of ground radar to find these "earthly Black Holes" and then start digging - might take a while to uncover the full amount and no doubt it'll be a bit grubby ( dirty money shouldn't come as a surprise ) but hard work should suit them . It is the Labour Party after all
