@katecat58 I assume our local "family" undertakers does the same service. And maybe cheaper!

Does this mean the "family" have to go at the same time.
You could ask if they offer a DIY service were they send you a plan, a shovel and a short step ladder, so you can climb in after posting the card requesting they come and fill the hole in. Or perhaps to reduce cost a family member could be asked to fill it in for you.

I'm having the discussion about full funeral or just a cremation with my wife. I have no family of my own left, a very small circle of friends, and there are comparatively few people on my wife's side of the family. She just has one sister plus a niece and nephew. She on the other hand has loads of friends.
For myself I've said cremation only as I don't want to 'waste' money that could help support her if I pop my clogs first. She's not very happy but will go along with my wishes. I am also happy to go along with what she wants for herself.

Just had an e mail from Hastings direct regarding my car insurance, it said when I renewed in April I was overcharged and as I paid annually they will be refunding the whole amount.:scratch:

Just had another e mail from them saying that the first e mail was an error and I should disregard it.:scratch:

How can they send out stuff like this in error, its crazy.

I wonder what will happen to all these people with cremation funeral plans when milliband puts a green tax on it or bans it completely.

I dont want a funeral or an earthly memorial. It would irritate me if money was wasted on my body after I'd died. I'll be happy if I'm dumped on the compost heap.

My mother always used to say that when she died we could put her in the bin. She died last year at the age of 98 and I followed those instructions and tipped a spoonful of her ashes in our bin …..

On the cheery subject of cremation or burial etc, I come from a long line of doctors, many of which were surgeons. Listening as a child to somewhat graphic discussions various relatives had on quite a frequent basis it became obvious that however good models and modern technology are, you cannot beat the “ real thing” when learning about the human body.
With this in mind I intend to follow the example of many of my relatives and leave my body to medical science. My husband left his to a relatively close university which is very highly regarded as a place to study medicine.
The process was pretty straightforward and once his body has served its useful purpose it is to be cremated and a sort of funeral will be held, organised by the university. This will happen some time this year evidently. I and anybody who wishes to attend is welcome when I am notified.
I organised a very simple remembrance service in a local church for his friends and relatives that wished to attend and then had a fairly merry post ceremony sort of wake. A wake certainly in Ireland ( husband was Irish) is traditionally held before any funeral but we had a bit of a knees up after. When someone dies very young or killed in an accident that is very different imo but if you have had a good “ innings” and not died a long painful protracted death, while still very sad it is all part and parcel of all creatures on this planet.

I have already put in an order for a wreath for me. It will say "Good riddance to the miserable old git."

I do remember reading/hearing something along the lines of concern about "emissions" from Crematoria. People don't really have much choice at the moment tho - burial or cremation.
With the advance in technology, I'm surprised no one has come up with an alternative - say a robot which glares at the corpse for a few seconds and Poof........you are just a few bits which can be swept up and used for compost
How popular is donating your body for science these days or again has technology made this obselete ?
ETA crossed posts with @hailbopp - interesting post :)

Probably not a cheap method but you would last forever.

Apparently air pollution near crematoria is bad because of the mercury in old fillings vaporising.

They were trialing dipping dead bodies in super-chilled liquid nitrogen, which causes them to shatter into teeny pieces when shaken. However, then the problem was disposing at scale of the liquids left.

Re the medical science bequests, it can be stressful for relatives as there is a very tight window for getting the body collected after death. So, you draw your last gasp and they have to rush off and get on the phone. It might be different if you die in hospital, of course.
