      Happy retirement @NigelJ .

Wen to buy a new PC in the sales today as mine is very old and curling up on itself. Chat with head chappy after I'd narrowed it down to 2 PCs, one unknown brand with 16Gb RAM and an HP with 32GB. Turns out 16GB is plenty for my needs but I asked about the brand as I didn't recognise it. Chinese! The HP was more expensive, obviously, and is an American brand partly made in Taiwan and partly made in China.

The lesser of two evils then but why can't we make this stuff in Europe anymore?

Chappy was highly bemused. This new one had better last me 14 years like the old one!

@Fat Controller, I have had the feeling for some yrs that hospitals make things as difficult as possible to discourage use. I think all the media scare reporting re waiting times in A&E and for ops/procedures, etc, has the same tactic in mind.

At my local one, drivers are always getting lost. I was stopped once when on foot and asked for directions to the morgue. I didn’t know and could not recall ever seeing a sign for this. When I got home, out of interest, I looked up a map of the whole hospital site online … and it wasn’t marked on that either. :dunno: I know they have one, but why they would want to keep the location a secret is beyond me.

I think there may be an element of that, although having had my own visits into hospital in recent years, there is no question that they are over-run, certainly at A&E level. Let's be honest though, the blunt truth is that capacity (physical as well as staff) simply hasn't increased at the same rate population has (amongst other factors).

Whilst I also understand that there has to be established practices in any organisation, the NHS simply hasn't evolved, so many of it's practices/layouts are still as they were back in the days of Carry On Doctor. In absolute fairness, part of the problem is that we build hospitals at the size they need to be on the day that the plans are approved - by the time the first brick is laid, they are already out of date and undersized... they are also victims of this ongoing madness where the powers that be are continually trying to punish people for having the temerity to own a car, whilst at the same time being more than happy with the revenue they generate etc... be much easier as a society if we took our heads out of our backsides and engineered things to accommodate the needs, rather than engineering them to try and force and agenda.

At the local hospital here it's not signposted either, it's not in an area patients would usually use. Staff walk past as it's just off a shortcut between two sections of the hospital. There is often a hearse parked outside it.

Very interesting - I always thought it would be the dead centre of a hospital.....

It was never there. It's not been there for a long time. Tony Blair only got done what he got done by going the PFI route and those payments are part of the reason the NHS is in the state it is in now.

Plus the repayments haven risen sharply due the payments being pegged to RPI, with inflation being high, it's added over £400m plus to the annual repayments.

Patients don’t need to find their way there, but relatives may. And the vehicle that stopped to ask me directions was a private ambulance, so I assume had either cargo to unload or collect.

PFI has been an absolute disaster.

@Fat Controller I feel your pain regarding hospitals. My wife was in hospital for 11 days after breaking her leg. At that time a load of building work was being done with various entrances closed off. None of the signage had been changed until you actually got to the closed off entrance! Even once you actually got through an unlocked door the adventure had only just begun. Internal corridors were also closed off halfway down but, again, nothing to indicate that. You wander down, following the signs, only to find locked doors. I ended up going through a door marked 'Staff only' as I was totally lost. Staff were great with "Don't worry we get it all the time" and than actually taking me through areas the public aren't really allowed. Maddeningly, the signage on the way out was all updated!
Our local HA has centralised various specialities at a particular hospital, which can explain why you have to travel miles on occasion.

Almost nothing electronic is completely made in Europe any more. Vast majority of components are made in Asia as their labour is so much cheaper.
