When we had some refitting done the Mrs wanted our coal fire in the lounge replaced for a coal looking fire but electric. She got her way

In our kitchen we still have a gas cooker so can always sit in there, keep warm and cook. Although she had the gas light removed from the wall over the cooker. We have some battery powered lanterns.

Last year we had 27 power cuts and 37 the previous year. They've been promising to update the electricity substation for the last 50 years!

We have gas CH which is no good in a power cut and everything else is electric. We’re stuffed!:gaah:

I don’t have anything that works in a power cut! I do always have a hot water bottle on the go, so that would give me a couple of hrs’ warmth. Then I would have to go and lie in the car, engine on and heater blasting!

Apart from the hob, we are similarly challenged here - I do have a couple of old oil lamps mind you, and they put out a surprising amount of heat... not enough to heat a large room, but add in some candles and it might be enough to take the chill off.

I've recently installed an induction hob and booted out the gas hob but we do have a wood burning fireplace in the adjacent dining room and I have a Rangemaster with gas hob out in the annex. Other than that we do have masses of candles and there's one in every room along with some matches, just in case.

I've got a rechargeable floodlight and a couple of lantern type lights that I can run on rechargeable batteries, plus a few candles, somewhere?

To be fair, if it was cold weather, got dark, I would probably sod off to bed.

Get a couple of cats. Or dogs if you prefer. Make marvellous hot water bottles and provide great entertainment in lieu of broken internet or rubbish tv.

Totally agree, I have 2, both fluffy cats, the bigger thus hotter one does not always want to sit on my knee, you try getting cats to do what you want, but the smaller one is parked regularly on me. Used to have Kerry Blue Terriers who were also great hot water bottles and gosh shock horror were parked at the end of my bed. I miss the “ lumps” but getting somewhat ancient to deal with quite “ tricky” dogs!!!

I can testify to that one.. I have two that can be like radiators when they sneak onto the bed, but they do have a canny knack of getting in the way.

I just have the immovable object who always wants to get where I'm going before I do, one problem being he dont know where I'm going so just keeps stopping dead in front of me when I'm walking anywhere.

At the top of the stairs? That’s a favourite in this house.
