Could someone considerably cleverer than me please explain the logic behind this below? Perhaps it is a case now of extracting the peat content and putting it back into the bogs. Hmm bit like intending to give life back to a leg of lamb from the butchers. Sorry but this to me is just a ridiculous excuse for not making use of a byproduct and pc gone mad. Read that it looks like the green light will be given to another runway at Thiefrow,I await with interest how that is going to sold to us as being of benefit to the environment…sigh.

I think he’s asking mushroom growers to stop using peat?

Mushrooms could easily be grown in peat free compost, which rightly Monty believes is much better for the environment. He is just sticking to his principles.

How does he know there is no peat in the recycled green waste? There is plenty of commercial growers using peat to grow veg, patio plants etc etc for the retail sector. There is plenty of commercial growers using peat to make hanging baskets for the retail sector. There is plenty of the general public who are buying peat-based compost to plant their own patio planters and hanging baskets etc etc. Where does the end product go when your summer/winter baskets and planters stop flowering, some on the garden if you have one but if your garden is covered in decking, flags, aggregates then the compost will go to a recycling plant. I doubt very much that the green waste is he is using will be 100% peat free.

The bandwagon that Geoff Hamilton started rolling rumbles on. Even the RHS toned down their initial enthusiasm for saving peat bogs when after years of scientific trials, they had to admit that none of the substitutes even come close.
Has Mr Don heard of the ultimate eco-friendly substrate for growing mushrooms? It's called manure

Maybe he should actually consider the quantity of the stuff he is importing.
I'd love a big mound of that but delivery and cost would be too much for me.

Lets face it, if MD started using peat the BBC would dump him overnight, he'd be out of a job.

That certainly was not my case. We planned long and hard before making the decision to emigrate, especially regarding finances. No amount of planning prepared us for the shock of discovering that I would have to wait six extra years before getting my pension. That left us living on one State pension and a small occupational pension. Having done the figures, it was just feasible to live here on that amount, but it would certainly have been a lot more comfortable with two! And no, I couldn't work over here, what with being a full-time carer for my mother and 2 acres of garden :)

We use peat based compost for our hanging baskets and over 100 patio pots and what can't be knocked of them at the end of the season (nearly all of it as it is bound with the roots) goes to recycling. Also, all of the plants we grow for sale (charity) are grown in that compost because all the trials we have done on peat free have shown a much worse outcome.

It is possible that we would get a better outcome, but not very sure about that, by devoting more time and effort but we have neither of those to spare and certainly don't have the energy or capability as we get older.

Give us reliable peat free compost, at a reasonable price, that is not shipped from the other side of the world and we may be persuaded to use it.

Not a follower of Monty Don but I assumed he made use of his own green waste rather than buying/importing it ? I've lost track of how much longer peat free compost will be available for public purchase or commercial plant producers. It seems to change with the weather :wallbanging:
I guess we all know that buying "compost" these days can be very hit and miss. The more you can make your own medium, the better but not everyone has the space or material to be self sufficient.

Or a hose pipe. It used to drive me nuts when he would pretend to water things in using a watering can. :wallbanging: As if you could manage a plot that size without using a hose. :th scifD36:

However, I solved my annoyance … by switching off.

Glad to hear@fairygirl is fine. :blue thumb: Thank you, @Philippa.

Maybe MD was cautious about being seen to use a hose pipe - one of my previous neighbours used to drive me mad when in the middle of the day in summer, he watered his garden by spraying water from a hose - the plants got bu**er all benefit where they really needed it - at the roots
